    Going to try jigging

im going to try jigging for the first time this saturday on a head boat using my tackle. Any tips?
I have a williamson 5oz (its green and white) and 2 offshore angler 7oz jigs (mackeral).
im going to use my penn special senator (i know its not for jigging) and my penn slammer rod. its a heavy set-up but im gonna tough it out...
i have been looking at pictures and videos of you guys catching monsters, so i want to give it a shot!

Good for you! What kind of headboat are you going to be on, and what kind of fish are around in your area? Based on that people can chime in on what set up and technique might make sense to try.

Its gonna be out of topsail beach, NC on the vonda kay. Targeting amberjack, and pretty much anything that will go for those jigs

Get yourself a couple of BlueWater Roscoe's..4oz and 7oz and try a few long slender jigs like the Eastern Tackle Katana's.

    Hold on tight!!

Oh boy you are in for it. You'll want to pick up some long slender jigs like the above mentioned or ones like Nagamasa, Jack-knife, Mejiyume, or MC Works Killer Jigs. Some productive colors for down there are oranges, glows, and greens. Work them fast, and when you think you're working them fast enough, work them faster

Let us know how you do!

i was going to throw one suggestion in there for the AJ - but Shoe beat me to it. i have caught AJ on every color (my most popular has been silver and silver/blue) but the key is to work em fast! real fast! faster the better! i love the ET Katana and probably my favorite right now is the Shout Slide Actor jig (avail @ protackle.com).

this is my Slide Actor after a 7+ft bull shark got ahold of it.

this is the ET 230 Long gettin the job done

Working a jig is often not about reel speed alone, but a combo of action generated by your rod tip as you reel. If the AJ's are there and chewing, your technique won't matter that much. Drop it down, yo yo up and down, then crank up a few hard turns working your rod tip to generate more action on the jig. Drop it back down and rinse and repeat so to speak.

On a side note, my family rented a house beside the Vonda Kay docks last summer so I could dock my boat...they brought home some nice groupers. Use a bounce off the bottom approach for those and when you do crank up for action, don't come more than 10' or so off the bottom. Good luck and post a report.
