GMAN, WOW. I must say I'm impressed with this thread. Got a question for you if you have the time I would much appreciate it. I have been dabbling in modern-jigging tuna for about five years. What I mean by that is I've known the advantages of jigging tuna for years but we only ever used the basic diamond jig in 4-8 oz. weights. Anyway, I was night fishing tuna and we knew they were under the boat at about 60-75ft. down. I was using a slimlined style jig with double assist hooks. I thought I was the man, I spent about twenty-five bucks p/ jig on these things! I never had a hit, the guy on the boat with me was using a larger bodied jig, same weight as me, but his had a single treble at the bottom of the jig. Guess what, he killed em'. Needless to say I went out and spent over a hundred more dollars on this style jig(I bought the BRAID heavier bodied style in various weights). Have caught a few fish on them over the years and never went back to the slim flat style vertical jigs. What is your thought on both the style of the bodies that I mention and the assist hooks versus the treble?

Oh yeah, and does anyone want to buy a bunch of barely used sushi style jigs?

I always live by the rule what works one day may not the next this goes for jig styles, colors. I've caught destryed fish on a pink jig only to try it again the next day and get strikes

I will respond to each question

    1. HOOKS - The hooks only come into play if you are dropping fish, other than that it doesnt make a difference. Now if your friend was landing fish on a treble and you were losing fish on an assist I would say maybe the assist hook wasnt wide enough

    2. JIGS - Its all in the motion - Those jigs are made to be worked in a specific fashion

The diamond jig is really yo-yo'ed up and down in the strike zone. If you were yo yo'ing a japanese style jig you probably wont get bit. Those jigs are really made to flutter and dart through the water with the Jerk crank technique.

so the question becomes were you just raising and lowering the tip in a yo yo fashion or speed jigging?

and in the end good old lady luck shines upon certain individuals every trip. Ive sat there and walked someone through this on a boat only to have the newbie out fish everyone else including me

All hail to lady luck, GMAN. Thank you for the quick response. You have taught an older dog a new trick here....hopefully! And by the way, in your profile pic, you're holding the one fish I most want before I die! Whats yours? Go to "Before your gone-Most Wanted" in the New England Forum. Thanks again and keep it vertical!
