The guys from bookfishingtrips.com came down again for 2 days of jigging. Peter, Andrew, Milton, Jimmy and Jason (his 1st jigging trip to NC). The weatherman was on the money with flat seas. Started in 140 feet with AJ action but the sharks were hungry. We did catch 2 nice grouper that we released unharmed waiting for the season to open. Moved out to 200 feet and started catching Cobia. We had some great fish but Peter caught the monster over 70 lbs. Also caught a few Africans. Moved out to the deep drop to try for some tuna but could find them plenty of AJs and very large sharks. Jason brought one to the boat that was over 350 lbs. Decide to move back into shallower water and found the Africans were hungry. Also picked up a small Backfin and a king. Ended the day with a double header to 32 African Pompano. We had 11 different species (5 Cobia and 4 Africans all over 30 lbs). Great day for day #1.

    Nice report...those APs are huge!

I've got some questions about the sharks. What kinds are hitting the jigs? Do they put up a good fight? Do they cut you off quite a bit? Do you view them as good sport or nuisance?

We've got quite the variety of sharks here in Costa Rica, but I've only had one actually hit a bare jig.

Most of the sharks are Duskys I believe. There are a few species that look very close (Duskys, Silkys and Sandbars) but most of these are Duskys. There are very aggresive and once they find the boat they normally eat a AJ or something we are fighting and then they eat the jigs. The issue with the sharks which provide a great fight is the cut off of the jigs. We did manage to keep most the the jigs by cutting the assist hook at the boat (risky business for the captain). The sharks provide a good fight but a long and hard battle with some tackle distruction.

Capt. Mike is awesome. Liveline Charters is awesome. Jigging is awesome. I love NC. I wish I could move there permanently.
