    a fisherman's dilemma

Willy's new fishing adventure began yesterday: Tuna Popping.
But he encountered unexpected problem which he never experienced in his entire fishing life.

To fight or not to fight.

This problem is not just for Willy, but a commonn problem to most fishermen who touch rods in Cape Cod recently.

He started with his ever smiling face, but his face started to change as battles went on. He didn't smile at all once battles passed 15 minutes mark. His smile came back when we put the tuna on his lap.

I know it is just beginning of your adventure for tuna fishing and you know now why I am so additictd to tuna fishing.
    Nice fishing with you, Willy.

-Willy started fighting with casual mood.

-then, something started to bother him.

    - I can't smile anymore.

-It is ridiculous. Why should I torture myself. anyone wants to rescue me ?

Ryan came to rescue him, but he realized it is not a joke to fight this animal.

Finally tuna came up to surface to rescue fishermen.

    Willy finally could smile again

Run and Gun for bluefin will definatley test your will, from the running and looking to the pandemonium that follows once you hook up. The longer rods take some getting used to but once you get the feel for them they can really help you out

    Congrats to Ryan and Willy

Willy is a smart guy. He is a Harvard student. I am sure he will figure out how to fight the monster next time.

This is his remarks when asked about BD100.
    Right observation.

I really liked it, nice and light for a long day of casting and working Slug-Gos, swimmers and whatnot. I believe I was using the 100 model (correct me if I'm wrong Dom), which is 8'8"--it certainly felt to be all of that while trying to pull on that fish when it was making its circles! One of those trade-offs, I guess; tough to fight that fish when it's straight up and down, but I may never have gotten the bite had I not been using a longer rod. Either way, it's a sweet sweet stick.

Great write up and Pics Kil...Until you get use to fishing the longer rods it's not hard to get corn holed..When we were tossing Irons and Live Baits out west on the Long Range boats 8' was the norm..but it took a few big Allisons to get you right..Ken

That kinda looked like my buddy Jim on his first tunas. 100lb BFT on 8GUSA rod.
I think Willy is now hooked though, its all good pain. I think a tad bit shorter butt grip would help him out.

The common mistake for fishermen who fight big tuna with long spinning rod for the first time is they fail to distribute their energy.
They fight like a hell from the start and it only makes them tired very quickly. Golden rule is the bigger the fish you fight, slower you fight.

Very well put Kil..You hit the nail on the head..This is something that needs to be discussed more since more guys here on the east coast are starting to get into this style of fishing and fight bigger fish..

Awesome post Kil beautiful photos too. Are the tuna migrating somewhere or are they usually that close to shore there? In the one photo there looks like beach/sand dunes in the background? The ahi are starting to run here in Hawaii got two yesterday /going back out tomorrow to try for some more.
