    First Drop

There is something about the first drop of the day...or the first drop with a new color. Last fall I had jigged a wreck off Morehead for 30 minutes with one color. Switched colors to an all glow and the jig didn't make it down on the first drop before it got slammed.

Same thing happened last weekend. Been jigging like crazy with pink, switched colors and the fish came on the first drop with the new color.

I think I read Chip got his big grouper on the first drop of the day yesterday.

There is something magical about the first drop.

i think you are on to something. last year at masseys, we would setup a drift and the first man down to the bottom was hit by a bluefin and it would be silent until we went to a new spot... and first drop at each new spot was hot

I thought this would have been a good thread? I imagined stories of folks hook ups on their first drop. Ohhh well.

I have a "one that got away" story from last Friday - on the first drop. What was apparently an underwater freight train disappeared with a brand new nagamasa - chafed off on a reef in 220ft.

That fish has been haunting my dreams ever since. I hope it's enjoying the new piercing

Fishing Yellowtail at Cedros Island I see alot of breaking fish from 25 to 40 lbs. Probably bad Karma on my part..... before the boat could drop anchor.... actually boat was still sliding to a stop. I threw a Salas 6x jr on my favorite jig stick with a new Avet into the frey. Winding the jig back to the boat you see this wake pushing alot of water behind my jig. 10 feet from the boat I decide to put the reel in freespool and let it flutter down. Just as I did this, A huge Yellow inhales the jig and starts violently shaking it's huge head. I get sooo excited I shove the New Avet's lever drag in gear...................
.................................You have never seen a 8 foot GUSA rod bend like this one........ The 40 lb. line then parted with a snap as if someone shot a gun. When I shoved the Avet into gear I passed the indent and went into full lock down mode. The captain from the wheel house window was smiling down on me flipping me bird.

First jigs do get bit..... but jumping the gun has it's payback.

There is nothing like a first drop, it almost rivals the first drive of a football game mentally. Setting the pace, understanding the unknown ... did we choose the right place? is anyone home? who is home? Is today the day?

Personally I always try to be the first one down and hooked up, just a ritual of mine. I want to get slammed first to set the pace. Calling out the demons if you will.

I believe fishing is much deeper than just trying to catch fish, questioning yourself your techniques, your jig choices especially IN NC where you spend 2.5 hours to get to your spot. You have a lot to contemplate.

First drop to me is almost spiritual ... and I mean that from the heart. When you love what you do it makes it all the better

Great thread Jim, sorry I missed it

Last night I received a call about a first drop that I will share.

The story starts with a jig sale last week to a guy who was going on an overnighter. He had never jigged before but wanted to try it. I hooked him up with some jigs for fishing at drift and lighter ones for jigging while anchored.

The short version is that on his very first drop ever with a jig, it got slammed by a big jack. That fish went on to win him the big fish pot on the head boat, which payed for his jigs and his next order as well.

Doesn't get much better than that. I think he might try jigging again.

Pure Majic!!! I'm really going to start to cerimonialize the first drop ( If thats even a word )

My first drop on Sunday was my very last 200g flat potroast. I jerked it one time and something took it. Good thing the Katanas have been working so well for Pete and Steve. Its going to be 160g Potroast and Blue Katanas for the next two months.
