Hey Madd-steph, for starters this can be a hudge subject as there are many thread here discussing it. I would start off by reading GMan's intro to casting.
To answer your question, most of the people up there throwing poppers and sluggos are using anywhere from a 7'6"-to almost 9' popping rod. That seems to be the norm. Popular rods are OTI, Ocean Revolution, Lamiglas, Hots We're using PE6-Pe8 lines (80-100lb) braid lines, and reels with moderate gear ratios that hold 300+yrd of line and can handle 20+lbs of drag. Most common seem to be Stella 18k, 20k, the Saragosa 18000, Accurate 20, Saltigas, Van Stalls, Zee Bass, Etc. I hope this helps.

Thanks. I usually stick to near shore striper fishing because we have a family boat and the kids are small. I have done little tuna fishing--one 90# yellowfin but the area I live in now is Gloucester,Mass. and bluefin tuna are close to me now. Still planning my attack again Thank you.
