So for those of you jiggers and poppers that are familiar with the PR knot, you are no doubt aware that the PR Bobbins are expensive. Obviously one of the main differences in the PR bobbin and a standard bobbin is the weight- the PR bobbin is heavier to ensure a tight serve as you make the knot. In an effort to try to save as much money in other places so I can buy more jigsI put together a PR Bobbin that works great and doesn't cost a ton of dough.
The basic components of my DIY PR Bobbin are an old empty thread spool that I had following my last rod build, and a standard fly tying bobbin.
I then went to Home Depot and got a piece of lead flashing, and some electrical tape. Here are the rest of the supplies:
I measured the distance between the raised sides of the empty spool and cut the flashing to that width:
Then I just wrapped the spool with the strip of lead:
Wrapped that in electrical tape:
And it was ready to rock:
Here's a completed knot with the DIY PR Bobbin:
Anyway, it's not rocket science, but I thought it might be able to save you all some dough.....now that I've saved money there, it's time to go jig shopping
