here is some blue eye travalla and gem fish caught off sydney australia.
great looking fish.
what do you use to catch them?
how deep?
these fish were caught 500m deep with electric reels .the reels were daiwa tanacom bull 1000.in australia we are not allowed to use more than 3 hooks .i put a pilchard on the hook threw the eye and use bottle squid to stop the pilchard from falling off.send it down to the bottom with a 2 kg weight using about 60 kg braid which is about 30 pound.all the best, its great to talk to other fishos from the other side of the planet.
Those are pretty nice sized Blue Eye mate, we call them Bluenose in NZ. Gemfish still rate as my favourite smoked fish of all time.
We catch good numbers of deep water species on jigs here in NZ, I personally have jigged as deep as 405m but most areas that hold Bluenose, Hapuka, Bass (Wreckfish) in NZ are around 150-300m which is quite easy to jig in.
Here is a pic of a mate of mine Lionel with a nice specimen of around 30kg caught on a jig
