    Thanks

Hi Guys, If you Google Opah there is a lot of info on it. The thing has a rib cage hard as cement. I don't know how but my 14 year old son tackled the fillet and he did an amazing job. Sure there may have been some left on but it went down to the crabs so nothing was wasted. It is a good luck fish in Hawaii and bad luck to those that sell it. We ate ours and gave away a bunch that we smoked. I am going to try and get another one this year which would be like getting struck by lightening twice. I called in to Ronnie Kovach and he was impressed...the next best rare catch here is a swordie. I found this board due to Tred's condition and I will post my catches here. Our season looks promising and starting to heat up. The jig I caught it on was the 6 oz. Mega-Bait Sardine with the single hook...same one that is sticking out of our large and East Coast tiny YFT...PV APOLLO out

Welcome to the board. We need more SoCal reports.

Where do you fish out of? I was In Newport Beach the other day wandering around the docks near the Balboa Ferry. Cool place, but it was a day trip so I couldn't hang.

    So Cal

I normally leave out of Misison Bay, San Diego area (Seaworld Drive). I have fished every landing and Newport Landing and Davey's Locker are great operations. We have the Cortes (z) Bank 100 miles offshore and the tuna and yellowtail can be great there. Our season is on track for the 30 year cycle but in the last 10 years we would already have a freezer of albacore and BFT right now. Every kelp paddy I am going to do at least two deep drops and see what hops on. I'll be reporting trip early in July after annual maintenance is completed...PV APOLLO
