Finally, here it is. The long awaited, much anticipated Avet Hoo-X has arrived. it looks to be everything we were hoping for. This reel will become one of Avets most sucessful models.
The reel pictured is one of the prototypes, it doesn't have the engraving depicting the wahoo or operating functions, model type, etc. which will appear on the finished models. We expect the production reels to start shipping on March 19
Larger than the LX-JX series, as pictured below, yet smaller, lighter, more nimble and much faster than the slightly larger Pro 30 size reels.
The Hoo-X will be produced in single and 2 speed versions with a narrow and wide spool available in each.
The single speed version will be available in 2 gear ratios to accomodate both high speed and low speed applications
Harry and Sarkis, the owners of Avet, being great tinkerers and imaginative innovators have been working on a new reel. I know most of you have expected a level wind SX or perhaps a spinning reel. Those are in the works. What they are bringing out is a new reel in the 40 class size.
This reel to be known as the Avet HOO-X looks to be a real hoss. About the same size physically as the Trinidad 40, this reel promises to deliver performance unmatched by anything currently on the market.
Base specs have the drag capable of pulling 26-27 pounds of drag max. line capacity will be in the 325/40 range (MONO ), weight around 28 ounces.
Capable of outstanding performance this reel will pull in 44 inches of line per crank, will sport harness lugs on an open top design, and is a 2 speed to boot. The Handle is curved inward to place the center of effort as close to the rod as possible to eliminate any tendency to wobble on high speed retrieves
You can bet the boys at competing manufacturers will drop their jaw when this reel hits the market.
Specifically designed with the giant wahoo in mind, this reel with its 5.4 high gear. 2.8 low gear will be quite capable of pulling in small marlin. tuna, giant kings, etc.
Specs:
Weight: 26 ounces
Line Capacity 325/40 mono
Drag Pressure: 26-28 lbs
Gear Ratios 5.4-1 2.8-1

I suggest to check the reel yourself before you make an order.
When I checked the reel, it got too stiff and lose free spool when I increased drag to max at strike. They say you get 20 lbs max drag at strike and 25-26 lbs drag at full out of Box.

Thanks for the info Kil, my dealer let me know about it and Avet is hoping for something great, did you give them any feedback on your findings?
Getting stiffer on high drag is a common problem with small lever drag reels and I expected Avet solved the problem on new Hoo-X, but they didn't.
I barely move the lever drag on max drag at strike. When jigging tuna, you got to move the lever drag in and out constantly and the smooth movement of lever drag is essencial.
I just talked with a guy who knows inside parts of reels.
He said the prototype reel I saw can be different from Hoo-X reels to be marketed as the protptype is just for display and they might made it in a hurry. It makes sense to me as their LX or 4/0 Ex reel doesn't have such a binding problem. I hope it is true.
I just checked the new Accurate 870 2-speed at a tackle shop today.
When I tightened the drag, I coulnd't move the drag lever as it happened to prototype Avet Hoo-X.
So I asked them to fill some line on the reel and tested again.
On about 25 lbs drag, moving drag lever is pretty smooth, turning handle is also very smooth and it doesn't lose much free spool !!! It is amazing the tiny reel can generate so much drag without losing free spool.
I guess I should have tested the Hoo-X with lines on.
I am afraid I gave a wrong impression on Hoo-X. I am going to test Hoo-X again with lines on when they are available.
I feel the round knob of the new 870 is more convenient than one speed 870 or 665 handle, though it seems the knob of Accurate ATD 6/12 power handle is a better choice.
It looks the Accurate 870 and 665 2-speed are going to be a big winner.
My question is not whether I buy the reel or not, but whether I buy both of them or not.![]()
I have been pleased with the Accurate products in general and the high speed 6:1 product has produced well for me with SBFT, YFT, LFA and mahi. I paired it with custom rod with power oval guides to keep the weight down and horse power up. The new two speeds just assist with larger prey we all target these days and especially with smaller , younger anglers.
It's nice having so many good products and manufacturers to choose from.
Kilsong I will look forward to your eview of the final release version of the HOO-X My guy says they will be perfected for final release, when are you hearing for a release date?
They said the reel should be availabe last September.![]()
I don't believe them anymore. For a single lever drag reel, I am pretty impressed with Alutecnos Albacore 12 Gorilla reel. With lines on, the reel doesn't get stiff much on 25 lbs drag. The reel can generate over 40 lbs drag, but it is useless because it get too stiff and very few guys can use 40 lbs drag anyway.
