Well the last day of the trip was not much short of spectacular, and I’ll start out with this photo to get started.
Brand New Baby Runboh
We knew we had to make it happen as the weather was going to turn for the worst by lunch time. We made our usual run in the grey light hour. This time we decided to push a little further north then our previous trips especially know that we had the help of other great fishermen now. As the sun reach full growth the tuna started to show. Before long we had an epic showing of feeding tuna acerbating mid air chasing half beaks. It is a sight to see!! The boat was literally surrounded by 150-180lb BFT. We had no clue of where to start. We ran to 2 pods and then let the wind do the rest of the work. We had a double header in no time. We took turns on the first hooked fish by Greg and then Mike quickly brought in his fish. We were not sure whether to kill the first fish or not, but we decided but the fish did not, as I missed with the gaff on a green 170lb tuna. I hit the leader and off went the fish. This was my first missed tuna and I held my head in shame. But now we had to focus on Gregs fish.
Now this fish was a different beast. We never saw color but Greg, Jesse, and myself all had 1-2 turns on her, but she wanted nothing to do with it. Greg even had to rethink and got confused out there, at one point he thought he was using a conventional rod and had his stella upside down. (Sorry Greg had to do it) OTI makes some nice gear, but the Tuna Sniper is an ass kicker. After about 30-40 minutes she popped the hooks.
After we recovered from this frenzy of action, we pushed to the next feeding pod. Some of us had hits but non of the fish came to the boat. This action continued for quite some time. Jesse even had a moster totally blow up out of the water smacking his plug about 2 feet from the boat just missing us. I will never forget that site. I finally managed to get a good hook after missing a fish on the same cast. She bent the BD100 for about 15 minutes and then Greg and Mike slid in double gaffs. I had the fish to leader in about 5 minutes, but it changed its mind and headed for the bottom, so I really enjoyed the battle.
All in all it was a great trip, and I wish the guys up there great success the remainder of the week. We’ll see you again on Saturday. We left the boat there as this is the best fishing I have ever experienced. I could like to thank Capt Dom and Capt Chip for being such good help and company. These guys are great to be with and even better fishermen. They are just fishy guys that love being there. They are not caught up in the tackle, the looks, or the fame. They really remind me of my closest fishing friends.
