Any feedback on the new Daiwa Saltist Spinning reel ?
I know the saltist conventional is well recieved and the specs on the spinning reel suggest it is a less expensive alternative to the Shimano Saragosa.

Without knowing what you're going after fishwise, it's hard to say. If it were BFT in the Cape Cod area, here would be my choices low price to high price:
Penn 950 SSM ( top & bottom of spool drag 16-18 lbs.)
Spheros or Saragosa 18000 (top of spool drag 22-25 lbs.)
Stella 20000 FA (if you can find one) (top & bottom 25-30 lbs)
Stella 20000SW (top & bottom 25-30 lbs.)
The drag estimates above are with a full spool. If you want strong drag at for the money: Spheros or Saragosa. If you can afford one good reel that you won't want to replace next year: Stella. If you just want to get in on the CCB fishery and want something bullet-proof that will do the job: Penn.
The Saltist says 22-33 lbs. drag. That almost guarantees that it's a small top stack. The full spool drag is likely to be 12 to 14 lbs.

I was also looking at the Saltist spinning reel for jigging and popping, compare the weight and the retrieve rate of the Daiwa Vs the Penn.
Penn 950ssm, 38 inch per turn 34.5oz
Daiwa Saltist STT6500H 53.1 inch per turn 24.Oz
This translates into a lot more line retrieved for less effort.
As for the drags i don't know, until someone reviews this reel, if it was lacking you could always upgrade with carbontex drag washers.
These reels are way less money than the Shimano's and for me Daiwa build good reels.

Just based on the specs, I am looking at them more as popping reels, than jiggers.
I checked them out at Tackle direct and they seemed nice. Then i saw one that had caught a big bluefin in the cape, I asked about it and I was shown a reel handle that had a lot of play in it now. It was not that the handle was falling off but there was about 1/4" worth of play in it. It seems that the handle does not screw into the main gear like the saltiga, this may be it's week point on big fish. He was also complaining about the drag too but it felt pretty good at the time. I hope others have better luck with them but for $200 i wouldn't expect them to be able to do what a saltiga or stella does.

I just got the reel and had a chance to put it to good use over the past two weeks. I used it for popping only and had it paired with an OTI 60/80 extreme poppin' rod.
I chose the saltist because I thougt it was hitting the right specs at the right price point...I can't exactly justify stella money yet. I knew it would have the drag necessary to handle big cubreras and roosters, and I figured it would be enough to handle 100 lb.+ YFT should I ever get into them. With the speed at 6.2:1, light weight and significant line capacity I figured I would be getting good bang for my buck. I've always had good results with Daiwa equipment.
So far I'm pretty happy with the reel. It is solid and worked flawlessly on a few big dorado, cubreras, and a 60-70 lb. amberjack. The reel was really fast, had no play, and the drag put the screws to the fish I hooked up on, however I never checked the actual drag output with a full spool on a scale. I think it will be a good workhorse for the kind of popping I do here in Costa Rica, and I will certainly put in my two cents again once I have a big tuna encounter and really test the reel's capabilities.

Why does the Saragosa cost $100 over the Spheros? Based on what i know, almost all of it is pure profit?

if you are looking at an 8000 size reel, buytackle.com has the stradic new fi series for $178.99 which is again basically the same reel. i could find no difference and the drag capacisty is actually 2# higher than the saragosa. the drag is not dartanium but what the hell is that anyways. i could not find any difference. the lip is not titanium either, but it put a whooping on 50# red drum and 60+# blacks in current this year and a bunch of cobia. holds 235 yrds of 50# powerpro with 30yrds 40# mono backing. i love the reel and you get an extra spool to boot which i don't think you get with the saragosa. i think the saragosa is more of an advertised reel basically the same and has more profit built in b/c it is advertised as a "jigging/popping" reel.
no experience with the saltist. my buddy loves his saragosa 8000 though and has put an arse whoopin on jacks, black drum, grouper, large hammerhead, african pompano,etc...

Got the 5000 series Reel and paired it with a Loomis Problue for tossing swimbaits to albacore and jigging. I'm impressed so far with the drag capability. full spool driveway test I got over 20Lbs but stopped there, I didnt want to break the rod.
The one trip so far with it I deep jigged (400ft) for lingcod and was happy with the performance. I loaded it with around 300Yds of 60Lb Jerry brown hollow.
The bail is manual only, there is no anti reverse disengage lever, casts well and takes in a bunch of line per turn. Having nothing to compare it to other than steelhead reels this thing is a beast.
