    Daiwa saltist 40?

I'm looking at buying a Saltist for jigging. With the popularity of jigging now and since I'm running charters again, I'm looking to get a few set ups for myself. I know most of my customers will bring their own, but I want a few for myself. I don't have the financial means to spend $600 to $1,000 for a spinning or conventional reel. I've got the numbers, ledges, boat, etc. Even got some seriously nice rods coming my way. But will the Daiwa work in all honesty?

Yes it will work fine, just don't lock down the drag. Set it at 2/3rds and thumb the spool if you need to stop a freight train. I have caught hundreds of ajs to 50# and grouper to 30# and snapper unlimited. I bought it when mt Torium blew up 3 times in 5 trips.

Go for it, i have the 50 black which is the 40 with a few upgrades. Get the carbontex drag upgrade for $25. She puts out like 22 lbs. of drag on full with the upgrade. The anti-reverse is nice. That's been known to go on the shimanos.

    Saltist

I posted about Saltist on other site. It might help you.

    gear ratio

Saltist 30TH's gear ratio is 6.4:1 which is too high in my opinion.
Most serious jig fishermen tell you that you don't need such a high gear ratio for most jigging situations and it loses lots of cranking power.
4.9:1 gear ratio of regular Saltist is a good compromise bewteen cranking power and speed jigging.

    size

Saltist 30T/30TH has a line capacity of 240 yards/25 lbs mono which is about 280 yards of 80 bls braided line. The line capacity of the 30T/30HT is marginal for tuna jigging. I'd rather have at least 300 - 350 yard of 80 lbs braided line for tuna jigging. For this reason, I'll choose Saltist 40 over 30T.

    replacement of parts

While the inside parts of Trinidad and Torium are the same, the inside parts of Saltiga and Saltist is not the same. Daiwa used cheap drag washer material for Saltist and also use plastic bushing instead of ball bearings for Saltist.

I highly recommend to replace the original drag washers with Carbontex drag washer which you can get at http://www.smoothdrag.com/price.html .

And to change out the plastic bushing in the right sideplate with ball bearings from http://www.bocabearings.com/main1.as...n=SMR693-ZZ_#5 (part # is SMR693-ZZ #5).

I caught over two dozen of tuna with Saltist 40 with upgraded drag washers before I gave the reel to a mate as a gift.
It is not Saltiga, but the reel can do a decent job for tuna jigging.

Saltists will take you the distance. Saltigas are even better.

I use the saltist 30t and have for last two years. Does great and I have yet to change out the drag to the carbonex. You will be happy of that I'm sure. I am how ever in the process of getting a 40t or 50t for a third set up and will more than likely put on a Daiwa rod. Hope this helps and have fun.

I'm leaning more to the 50 saltist now. I like the upgrade option for jigging big AJ's and grouper. Is this a good deal?
