Jeremy--with you 100% on the conventional vs. the spinning jig setups. Line capacity blows on the spin gear as well, unless you go ligher with the braid than I am comfortable with. I would love to fish spin tackle with many of my charters in various applications, but as many times as you tell them not to reel against a running fish, the mind shorts out when the rod gets bit.

One question, I think I saw that you guys were using TVC66MHs? Are they enough for yellowfins and big AJs? I've used the TVC58XH a lot, but if it were strong enough I would think the former would be a better choice and much more versitile.

Chris- I think the rods are heavy enough; with that being said they have caught big fish and their performance was good. If the combo can stand the beating a 50# AJ gives it, I assume it would stand up to a 40# yellowfin. I haven't caught a tuna bigger than that on the rod.

We actually had one break on a very small fish. I guess it was that rod's time to go.....but no other problems so far.

I am anxious to try it on some of these 150- 200# bluefins that have been around. We'll have a true test then.... not sure if my Captain will let me.....

When are you coming up this way?

Good points on the line twisting. I didn't think about that. That could get expensive in the long run.

    Jeremy,
If you're going jigging for 150+ bluefins I may come tomorrow... Ha ha I wish. The boss just had minor surgery and will be down for a bit, so I kind of have an electronic ankle bracelet on. Would love to get up there in April sometime if the weather gets right. Still not certain what this year is going to bring charter wise around here but I think we'll have some trips in June/July. We had two for today but I drew straws and lost. Have you guys been after it lately?

The 30T will hold 330 yards of Daiwa Boat Braid PE-6. It is narrow and you don't have to worry about level winding. If you are going to use them for gulf stream trolling as well, maybe you need the bigger reels, but that is a lot of line.

    Kilsong,
What is the advantage to changing out the bushing to the bearings? Can you give a little more detail on where this is located? I am a newbie when it comes to reel upgrades...
    Thanks

    George,

Replacing the bushings (plastic) with ball bearings (steel) will increase the strength and tolerance of the spool as it sit inside the frame.

You can download the parts schematic for the Diawa Saltist here:
    http://www.daiwa.com/PartsDiagram/In...0T&category=55

    or here:

    http://www.daiwa.com/PartsDiagram/Pa...T30T_40_50.pdf

The bushing is part #41. Since I have the Saltist 30T I opened the spool tension knob to peek inside and it is indeed plastic. So next I looked inside my Diawa Ishidai Z40 and that part is stainless steel (as well it better be for the price of that reel!).

I love the size of the 30T it fits perfect in my palm while speed jigging. I have the Carbontex washers, just need to get the Cals grease then I will install the new drags, I will also replace the bushings as per Kilsong's recommendation.

All in all I think the Saltist 30T is a nice reel for its targeted application. Next up for me is the John Baker JB4, it looks to be about the same width as a Saltist 30T. Do anyone know for sure on that?

    peace!
    Ty

    You are very welcome.
Thats pretty much what I did on this rainy Saturday here in the Philly region... fiddled with my jigging gear (with a real Fiddle and danced a Jig).
