    Cuberas in Venezuela

Contrary to Pacific Cuberas that one catch in Costa Rica or Mexico, which you can get on Poppers near shore rocks, our Atlantic Cubera habits in medium deep, around 150-220 ft of water. The battle is intense down there and most of the time they brake your leader, no matter how strong it is.
Last weekend, we went to the Farallon, a rock about 17 miles from shore, famous for big Cuberas. They gather on full and new moon of summer months,May, June, July and August. And sure they were there, but from four bites,(three lost jigs) i managed to get this 44 pounder, enough to feel happy for the whole week !! Don't try it using wire leader, they simply do not bite.

    Regards, Petoven.

The next bite on a jig.
    MY HERO!!!!! A genuine report.

After I get done with my costa rica adventure that is on the horizon, I'm setting my sights on coming down there. I think my dad is ready to do some traveling and I'm going on some adventures with him while we both still can.

THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU for the report.

    Nice

That is a nice fish. I have heard of cuberas here in Florida but have never boated on here. They look like a huge mangrove snapper which we get here on the same conditions full moons summer months.

That's a nice cubrera Enrique! We hooked four big ones on poppers this past weekend in Costa Rica but came unbuttoned on all four for various reasons...pulled hook, rock cutoff, barracuda interference, and a broken lure...

They are an awesome fish...no matter where you catch them.

Apparently there is a cubrera sub-species in western Africa that gets up to 150 lbs.!

I know we have them on a few larger deep water wrecks off of Jacksonville. The problem is, the cubera are big, and where they hang out has high relief. Most who hook them get rail roaded and get cut off, only to blame a big gag.

I know a guy who caught one 56 pounds off of one 5 or 6 years ago, and the diver's always tell you about them in the summer on the deeper large wrecks.
