    Crazy Question

Obviously most of everyone on here goes jigging off of a boat. But here is my question: Has anyone jokingly or seriously tried a vertical jig to catch a fish off of a pier? The reason I ask is because I have been to some places that you can see Kingfish, Bonita, Cobia, Sharks and other fish crusing underneath and wondered if you could attract them.

That is right, the butterfly style jigs. I was curious because I have soaked live bait and seen those fish swim right past it an I was wondering if a vertical jig would be a way to get them interested. If a king gets it, watch out.....guess that would call for having plenty of line on the reel also!!

yes butterlfly jigs, or stuff like them (i got tired of jerk jiggers and i wanted to see if verticle jigging would work). you better have one stout setup if you are gonna jig a cobe off the pylings

how effective are butterfly jigs when jigged horizontally? Most piers I go to are 10 to 15 ft deep. I have only jigged vertical offshore in 50+ ft deep water.

If you can cast out then it could work, just keep it under the water.

What jig has the most horizontal movement when jigged? Flat side?

i used the small butterfly jigs and the gotcha jig fish jigs rigged regular and backwards so they were heavy end down. usually i would chuck it out pretty far, let it sink and work
(erratic speed jigging style) it until it hit surface and let it sink again.

fman fishing from a pier are you using live bait on a pin rig or are you using cut bait. also jigs will catch cobe and kings like the others say cast out and jig it back to the fish .

I am not too sure what species of minnows they were but you could see large schools just below and I would just send a sabaki rig down to get them. This was on a peir the Gulf on the Florida Panhandle. I would then rig the bait on a fish finder rig and let it soak.
