My dad and his cousin who is also a property owner in our development came down to fish for a couple of days this past weekend.
All the boats that mostly troll are crying up a storm as the El Nino has the surface temp up around 89 degrees by mid-day. Their recent sailfish bite that was spotty at best has all but died and they're other main form of fishing (trolling live baits along the coast for roosters) usually sucks as well when the water gets warm. A few of the local charter boats got straight up blanked last weekend
This doesn't happen to the "La Carlita" though...because we've invested the time and money into this godsend of a fishing technique called verticle jigging....y'all know what I'm talking about!
Here are some highlights of the action.
A cool shot of the river run in the early morn
Lots of roosters at the offshore reefs right now...one of 7 hooked in two days.
A solid blue trevally. As you can see from the ocean conditions we had a good "weather window"...My next trip down from the states I'm bringing a slalom ski to keep in the cargo hold should fishing get slow in the mid-day sun.
Those of you that have never met my good friend the cubrera snapper really need to do so. He is a mean ass mf'er, but a lot of fun to hang out with. This is one of the best fishing photographs I've ever taken.
Bull sharks find pompano delicious as well.
This is what happens when you throw a live 6 lb. bonita caught on a jig immediately onto a big cirlce hook. Dad got a lecture after this on where to properly put a fighting belt on someone in the future. My back was killing me.
The big AJs are back....unfortunately they didn't take a jig all weekend long, and it wasn't for a lack of trying.
We've officially ruined freshwater fishing for my uncle.
Small pretty jig = big ugly broomtail
Do you like the color coordination of bandana and ET jig Jim?
I love fighting roosterfish...all the strength and stamina of an AJ, but with unpredictable direction changes and surface activity...they even jump every now and then. This one acted like a dorado the first 20 seconds of the fight.
They're a pretty regal looking fish as well
My dad was pretty pleased with his firts ever fish on a popper...
and was ecstatic about his second
The 6-7 lb. football tuna that we usually catch at these offshore reefs were double the size this trip...makes for good catching and better eating
I've never seen so many flying fish as I did these two days...this one flew into the boat as we were cruising, ricochetted off my shoulder and into another guy's face. We were fine...the flyer became bait.
It was a solid two days. Jigging was the golden ticket too just about all of our success...we pulled the bottom dwellers from their lairs, sniped tuna from the middle, and had roosters hitting jigs near the surface.
I'll be putting in a session tomorrow with some ideal tide changes going on...could be an epic day.
Stay tuned - Cassidy
