After a busy week of showing property I finally got out for a full 12 hour day on the water this past Sunday. I was joined by Sierpe del Pacifico builder Marc Leroux and my captain buddy Deidy.
The plan was to head south and hit up some jigging points early in the morning for a mixed bag of bottom fish, and then explore a series of inshore reefs and rocks that I had heard were productive for roosters and cubrera.
The "Sirena" rock was the first jigging spot. Normally this place rocks. The graph was showing the fish, but they wanted nothing to do with our jigs. Big, small, fast, slow, fluoro...it didn't matter. We caught one small AJ and few big blue runners.
This is a great billfish spot as well. Deidy's brother guided clients to a black marlin estimated at 700 lbs. here a week before. They fought the fish on a 50 wide for 8 hours before wiring and releasing.
It was then off to the "La Chancha" Rock for some topwater fishing. On my second cast I nail this blue trevally - the biggest one I've ever caught.
Over the next 2 hours of popping the three of us raised about 10 roosters, hooked 3 and landed 0. I get the dummy award for losing all 3 roosters.
We head off shore for a bit and land a nice hen dorado and some football YFT
Tossing a fly at a tripletail hanging under a piece of flotsam is a good way to break the trolling doldrums
Once the sun settled a bit and temps cooled we went to our number one rooster spot...a rock that rises to 40 ft. from 70 ft.
First cast Marc catches this guy on a blue OTI Komodo.
At the same time Deidy hooks and lands this guy
The fish inhaled a River2Sea dumbell right next to the boat. The wake and splash the fish made was incredible. I'm usually not very good at estimating weight, but I'd say at least 70, probably more.
The dumbell is a great popper in my mind, especially considering that you can pick em up for under $20...big profile, nice bobbing and side to side head movement, all the while throwing out a big chug. In the last two trips now it has taken world class cubrera and roosterfish. I just placed an order for some more.
All in all it was a good day. Things never got crazy, but we always had action and ended up with a world class rooster on a popper.
We were all smiles on the run back up the river
Despite the slow real estate market here we sold another lot in the development to an avid outdoorsman from Alaska this past trip. He saw the opportunity to have a vacation home with views of mountains and rainforest on the bank of a river that is fully navigable to the ocean in all tides as a real plus. When I told him that boat slips at the nearest marinas (70 miles away both directions) start at about $165,000 - 4 times the amount of our entry price point, he pretty much made the offer.
If anyone is interested in owning a piece of Costa Rica where the jungle meets the river that meets the sea feel free to PM me or visit our website www.sierpedelpacifico.com . As an added incentive I'm giving all of my GPS coordinates and fishing log to anyone who writes and offer, haha...seriously!
