    couple questions

what can you do to keep from getting bit off by sharks, kings, wahoo, or any other toothy critter when butterfly jigging. Do you just put 6-12 of wire and then mono leader? what wire? will it mess up the jigging action?

Do tuna care if you use a mono leader and not flouro? can you catch tuna with a wire leader like described above?

can you butterfly jig dolphin like you can tuna?

    Thanks, Anders

The next bite on a jig.
    Good morning Anders.

I have asked this question from about everyone, because we lost about 12 of the Ayasugi's to wahoo's/kings last summer. Letting it down, then a bump, then nobody home. They love those things because of they way they fall.

The majority answer is this.....wire kills your bite. Not always, but most of the time.

The best recommended solution at this point is a swivel in front of your jig to offer an 1" or 1 1/4" of extra protection. Apparently there are also some styles of jigs that spin when you jig them and this helps with that also.

Together as a community we can hopefully solve this one before the summer is over and put up some big wahoo pics.

I have considered using tieing 6"-12" of Tyger wire leader after my mono leader directly to the jig. It seems like you can knot it or fuse it with a lighter. I was playing with a some and it is more flexable than my flurocarbon leader. The only draw back it the expense of the heavier poundages because they don't come in small amounts after 50lb.

Has anyone had luck with that brand?

Where you getting bit of above the jig or where they biting of the hook? It would be nice to come up with something that works and doesn't effect the bite.

Getting bit off above the jig. We lost the whole thing a couple times. Sometimes you would get a couple bites, no fish, then reel up and there would be these long tooth like gashes in the lead of the JIG!!! Don't know what it was but if it's cutting lead it's definitely cutting my jig off. We bought the wire leader assist hooks to try and stop it but, we never caught any toothy critters. I have caught kings before, by accident, but we had braided assist hooks and they were hooked just right.

And that is the 24 million dollar question of the day. To answer your question. I have found that if you choose to use wire it will just about kill the bite entirely. There are however kamikasi fish willing to commit suicide reguardless of what you
use. I tried about a 12" and 6" piece of tyger wire and it shut down the bite. My group lost over 60+ jigs last year to toothy critters, mostly kings, but I would rather loose jigs than work your butt off and not have many bites.
You can use mono for tuna but fluoro works 300% better for them.
And yes you can catch dolphin on jig.

Considering my very small aresonal of jigs is made up primarly of yours. I'm glad your jigs are resonably priced, so when comes time to replace them I don't have to sell a kid to the circus.
