At least you try it, but guys who start spinning reels first never learn how to use conventional reel effectively.

Many fishermen in the US start fish on boats and they have more chance to start with conventional reels, but fishermen in many countries start fishing from shore and most of them use spinning reels first. I believe that is major reason you don't see many jig fishermen outside of the US using conventional reels.

Here is a duel video between a conventional reel and spinning reel by JM guys in Perth, Australia.

Cool video, Kil. Me, Joe and Jann are gonna go kill a bunch of stuff tomorrow. It's getting pretty good.

I didn't vote because I honestly do not have a preference. They both serve different purposes for me.

I like the lefthand retrieve (stronger arm lift) of the spinners but I also like the controlled drop of conventional. I can cast my lefty 870N way better than I can cast my TwinSpin 30. So I guess a lefty conventional would be my first choice.

My builds run 2:1 in favor of conventional.

I wish I were there tomorrow. I was about to drive down to NC on past Saturday, but I decided not to go at the last moment to take care of my mother who visited from Korea.
As I expected, Joe had a good catch of red grouper upto 28 lbs. After my daughter's wedding this Saturday, I plan to drive down there for grouper jigging one day and AJ jigging next day before bluefin tuna show up off NJ/Maryland/Virginia.

I use spinnig reels for popping exclusively. I am pretty good at casting with conventional reels as I have been using them for 30 years, but I found spinning reels are better to work with poppers and is trouble free, when popping.
Bluefin start to show up on Stellwagen Bank, MA now and I can't wait to cast some poppers to big boiling bluefin.
    Good luck tomorrow.

conventional all the way. less fatigue jigging with an overhead reel IMO and you can impart just the same action as a spinner plus add action to the jig on the drop which isnt done so easy with a spinner. I like both reels but to jig I will always grab the conventional. I've got a couple of stella setups when I really need to put the hurt on fish but I find its not always max drag that stops the yellowtails....... work smarter not harder

Don't know yet! I'm still building my first Tuna jigging rod as a spinner, started it tonight! I have 2 that are Conventional/spirals, but I haven't done much with them yet, either!
