    Conventional/Casting Reel Choice

There has been a lot of discussion about spinning reels. The good, the better, the best, the run far and fast away. But I haven't read too many discussions on casting reels.

I think I have made a pretty good choice on my spinning stuff, but I would really like to get the same kind of info for a casting reel.

I'll start with the question, what do you all think of the toriums?

    Jim,
captain B swears by his toriums which he uses mostly bottomfishing. I prefer the daiwa saltist at the same price point.

Yes, Saltist reels come in both low (4.3:1) and high (6.2:1). High gear is Ok for jigging, but low is much better for bottomfishing.

If they can take the punishment given by the Beast, they must be pretty good. He is a Shimano man.

I'm thinking along the lines of jigging, so the saltist with the higher ratio might be a better choice for me?

Good entry level reel without a doubt and a favorite among party boat fanatics however there are many better choices IMHO

I'm all ears. I may have to go with the entry level first because of well...money, but I do like nice tackle, so I know it won't be long until I move up and then I will have something for guests to use as well.

I do know that I will be picking my reels first, then having the rods built specifically for the reels.
