    conventional jigging reel

ok with the inherent design problems in the torium/trini saltist/saltigas what reels are u guys using or moving to? my torium has lasted so far, but is starting to feel a little squirrely. i need to pick up something else that can take 450+ yards of 65-80 lb braid and handle some beastly bottom dwellers hopefully without exploding.

are you trying to keep the weight of the reel as light as possible?
    is $$ a issue?

    i like the saltigas.
if i was going to use a heavier reel
i might look at the everol, avet,

I have fished with the Fin-Nor Offshore Conventional this year since May. I have absolutely BRUTALIZED this reel! Dropped for snowy's with it caught 90lb AJ with it etc., and it is still going strong! My only complaint about this reel is the free spool. There is a bushing on the spool shaft instead of a bearing.

Quantum has a new reel coming out: Cabo PTs Conventional. I think it is the exact same reel as the Fin-Nor except more bearings and a different finish. I have not had my hands on one yet, but if the new Quantum has a bearing for the spool shaft instead of a bushing..... I think it will be awesome.

I took apart both my Saltist and the Fin-Nor and they are designed almost identically. EXCEPT the Fin-Nor has a beefier anti reverse and that was the selling point for me. I expect the new Quantum will have the beefier anti reverse as well.

I have been using torium and tekota reels for blackfish/sea bass for the last 3 years and just this morning I had to send the first one back to shimano.I took it apart and couldent figure out what is wrong with it maybe A bearing or something and has A hardtime going into free spool. But overall these are good reels.I even tested the tekota's out on some BFT earlier in the year.Biggest was about 130pds on A tekota 800 just wanted to see if the levelwind took anything away from the reel.It was able to produce about 21-22pds of drag and hold A lot of braid.

well obviously lighter is better, but it is not really the utmost concern for me as this will primarily be a grouper reel and the limit here is 1 per person so the jigging day grouper-wise does not last too long. moneywise id like to keep it under 400bucks if possible but im flexible. really what i need is a backup, or a double so if one reel explodes, i have another. kinda necessary when u r 50+ miles offshore. i really just wanna know if anyone has found bulletproof stuff. chris w what area u catching those brutes down under with? paul - doesnt the saltiga carry the same design flaws as the others? WLB ill take a look at those suggestions, thanks for the input.

Saltiga is made of machined aluminum where as the Saltist is cast. Therefore the anti in the Saltiga is inherently stronger than that of the Saltist.

Cast or machined, it does not matter. The Trinidad has the same problems as the Torium. The problem is the plastic cage on the bushing. When you load up enough drag this will flex.

As far as one exploding, that isn't really the way any of these reels act when the anti-reverse fails. You'll start to see some backwards play in it, and as it gets worse you'll have the spool slip backwards with a grating noise when it is under heavy loads. This slip starts out being very quick and will get worse and worse as the anti-reverse fails. If replacing the bearing doesn't bother you then fish it, pay attention to what the reel is doing and replace the bearing as soon as you get any indication that it is going. If you keep fishing it, eventually the sleeve will start slipping on the plate and you'll have to replace the sleev and possibly the plate, and that will start to get pricey.

trinidads dont last @ all jigging

ive seen 2 give up the ghost. one time my friend about had his wrist broke when he cinched the drag down and a 9' tiger got a hold to it. the hand was winding backwards @ a rapid rate to the point where he could not loosen the drag. I like saltiga's but had mine in the shop 3 months old and they said the drag was worn out..........i didnt catch enough monsters to justify but they had it back to me immediatley under warranty. im having good luck w/accurates so far, i like the way the drag feeds smoothly. I might try a fin nor on whitelakebucks advice, he definately puts them to the test.

I can't speak for the Trinidad design or the plastic sleeve. But I do know that the ANTI's that failed in my saltist were a result of the metal peg made into the side plate came completely off. The side plate had to be replaced to fix the ANTI. When I got it back, and broke it again. Therefore, I sent it off to Alan Tani and he fixed it for me. You can see in this post here:

    http://www.ifish.net/board/showthread.php?t=175766

Once he fixed it, I busted the ANTI pawl. Now the reel works fine until about 12 pounds of drag then starts to spin backwards.

For Daiwa Saltiga's, I don't think there are any plastic components so ANTI failure is a result of a busted pawl or the metal peg breaking completely off the side plate. I have fished Saltiga conventionals for 2 years now and have had 0 problems with the ANTI's, that is why I inferred that machined aluminum is stronger than cast aluminum.

I am starting to think that no reel is gonna last very long in my hands so I might as well get used to it!
