With the lack of decent weather in a long, long while, the depressing three week cold snap we just experienced, and a depressing Striper season JC, Aaron, Jordan and I decided the only cure for our “wintertime blues” was a day of offshore fishing jigging for Blackfin Tuna out of Hatteras, NC.
In typical winter fashion the ability to forecast the weather this weekend was difficult, causing us to scrap out originally scheduled trip on Friday, however, when I woke up Friday morning I saw the forecast for Saturday had changed significantly and now looked about as good as it could get. After a few phone calls to re-crew up and a conversation with the meteorologists at NWS Morehead City, NC that confirmed Saturday’s weather was going to be “as good as it will get” we headed for HI Friday at noon.
We left the dock at sun up and headed to the 230 rocks, where I had got a report the Blackfins were caught the day before by the jigging charter fleet. Ran out in flat calm seas and started trolling a five rod spread searching for tunas about two nm west of the 230 rocks in 68 degree water. Couldn’t find anything on the troll and started jigging some lower water column marks right on the drop off at the 240 in 40 fathoms but these were mostly Jacks. Some of the Jacks got ate by big sharks and some of the big sharks ate our jigs, we landed three sharks estimated at 350 pounds. FAs were also found higher in the water column (same area) and would turn out to be the secret to our Blackfin success.
Decided to move a bit north and at the 250 in 50 fathoms I saw marks that looked promising. We had some success earlier in the day keeping fish around the boat by tossing chunks of FA and this the technique proved to be “just what the doctor ordered”. In short order 30 pound class Blackfins were busting around the boat and it didn’t take long before they were hitting our jigs. We floated out a couple chunks on fluorocarbon leadered circle hooks and it was ON. Doubles, triples, chunk bites, jig bites all made us forget our “cold weather blues” all together!!! The action turned off abruptly once several big sharks showed up at our transom, including an estimated 10 foot hammerhead, all of them were very interested in not only our chunks but our hooked up tunas as well.
When it was all over we had boxed seven, 30 pound class Blackfins, landed and released three monster sharks and caught countless Jacks and FAs.
Much life from the 230 in 40 fathoms up to the 270 in 50 fathoms, 72 degree water temp, not particularly clear but a nice dark blue with about 2.5 kts of current. 160 to 200 gram jigs on 60 pound fluorocarbon leader, jigged up thru the marks was the ticket.
Thanks to Aaron, JC and Jordan for an awesome day and a great way to start gathering video footage for Chumlordfishing’s best of 2010.
