    Caught first fish jigging today!

No pictures, but it was a 15 or so pound Kingfish on a Shimano flatside jig blue mackerel color. During the fight some other toothy critter bit 1/3 of him off though.

I also found out that I'm a spinning reel guy and not a conventional reel guy. Too bad I just bought a $300.00 conventional rod and a $150.00 conventional reel.

My buddy that was with me hooked two bottom fish on my light spinning rod and a Shimano butterfly jig but they both got off.

The next bite on a jig.
Congratulations Van!!! As you get more, you will become more confident in your style and tackle.

You bring up a good point about spin v conventional. Its a 50/50 split. So hang onto your conventional, because your next guest might prefer it.

I like the conventionals, but keep a nice spinner for others to use.

Again, many congrats!! and good job. I'm happy for you.

Ditto. Its a helluva lot of fun and always leaves you wanting to catch bigger and more.

Im about 50/50 on my spinning vs conv gear, I prefer one over another for certain things, but not 1 for everything.

Some like all spin or conv, personally i like to have some of each avail.

Congrats on your first jigging fish! Too bad it got bitten off. As for spinning vs conventional; I have one each. When I get tired using one I go to the other! Plus that way, I have a spare outfit with me. BTW, what kind of rod and conventional reel was it?

    Congrats

    Don't throw that conv away.

I'm like Jesse I like both, maybe its just me, but I can switch to either with no problem. Because they are differant you can actualy rest by switching if that makes any sense.

I agree, the switch and rest works for me also.
Congrats on your new found addiction, nothing else is quite as fun once you start. Nice thing about it is on this sight there is lots of knowledge to learn from.

Thanks guys, went again today and lost the flat side jig to some toothy critter, and my buddy almost lost the regular butterfly jig to some other toothy critter (or maybe it was the same one). Would have been nice if he had caught it and brought back both jigs, but what are the chances of that happening.

I've been reading and I see some people don't like wire leaders but I need to try because I can't really afford to lose two jigs every two days. Especially when it takes a month for me to get them here. I'm going to try 80 lb test or so, I had 80 lb flouro leader on there the last couple of days.

I have a Fin-Nor Offshore 30 and a 6 ft custom jigging rod. I've been using spinning gear all of my life and I'm pretty sure that's why I prefer it. I guess I should have thought of that first.
