try to get the lightest outfit to use so you can jig for a long amount of time
also try to get a good jigging outfit with power
to handle the fish you target
get some jigging line so you know you lure is at the right depth
have a few different types of jigs to try size
size and colors
you never now what will work on any day
to get the butterfly technique right, you must choose a jig weight that matches the rod strenght. Think of it like a fly rod where the rod must be matched to the appropriate weight fly line since the line becomes the weight that the rod casts.
All Japanese jig rods have a quoted range of jig weights that match its action.
Jig weight is generally matched to water depth which in turn is matched to rod strenght.
With butter fly jigging (mechanical jigging, jerk /crank, Japanese jigging) the rod must load when the rod is jerked upwards. It will accelerate the jig during the jerk then fade as the rod is lowered. This sudden uplift of the jig will cause it to dart then hesitate as it runs out of upward momentum. The jig then planes (slides) horizontally until the next rod jerk. It is this darting, sliding, fluttering action that attracts predators.
For novices, choose a parabolic rod that is moderate/light in strenght with a jig weight that is slightly heavier than optimum. The extra jig weight will help load the rod which will in turn help you develop the rhythm and timing needed to master the butterfly technique.
ChrisW,
Thats some great information. I have the jigs, but have been holding out on buying a rod until I understand them a little better. That is good info.
Thanks
Jim
Yeah the JM300-250 or even lighter, would be a good rod range to begin with. Use 400-300g jigs - slightly heavier as explained earlier. But don't rip the rod because you'll overload the rod, gentle jerks to begin with.
This weight jig would suit jigging in 300-400'. Rule of thumb is 1g = 1' or 300g = 300'. But for novices, increase jig weight by 20-30%.
You'll know when you got it right. Suddenly your technique becomes smooth, you can feel the rod gently load and unload. Everything starts to become focussed and you will begin to increase speed until it all turns to crap again. That's good because you are beginning to push the boundaries that your technique will allow. As you do more of this, the boundaries extend and before you know it, you are jigging as quickly as the gurus do. Generally, butterfly jigging is a slow technique but it still catches a lot of fish. A lot of predatory fish are turned on more with a higher speed. When you have graduated into the high speed stakes, use the slim, bottom weighted jigs. These are more suited for the high speed "power" style of jigging.
A lot of this will be revealed in my new jigging DVD titled "Heavy Metal at the Ranfurly". This is a 94 min jigging
video chocked full of awesome jigging action showing the mechanical jigging (butterfly) technique at all stages of competence, the hit, fight, landing, photographs and the release. There is a 15min instructional section explaining jig designs, rods, reels, techniques & knot tying. This is the definitive English language jigging DVD shot in pristine New Zealand waters.
I've posted Paul a copy so pester him to stock them![]()
