Maybe I just like math or something...but I don't have a problem counting down the time it took me to reach the bottom on the first drop with a jig and then dividing the depth by the time and see how many feet it drops per second. Gives me a rough idea of how deep I am and I don't have to stare at the line while I am dropping down.

    Works for me anyways....

Swivels on Knife jigs for tuna.

As far as swivels go what ever you use (i like the spro). I attach the assist hooks to the swivel, and then the jig gets attached to the swivel via a split ring. This takes the split ring and the jig out of the link between the main line and the fish, which allows me to keep the hardware(Split ring) size to a minimum.

Ok...I am kind of new to the jigging thing and have no idea what "PE" 6 or 8 or 10 stands for. Sorry to derail this thread but can anyone enlighten me?

count in head or count line markings what ever works for you. To me its a lot quicker when they say marking tuna at 100 and i drop 4 colors

PE is the line rating for Polyethylene fishing line. Guys correct me if I'm wrong but PE-6 rated at 80 lbs and PE-8 is rated at 100lbs and PE-10 at 130lbs.

The next bite on a jig.
Here is a little more info.

PE is a diameter rating system.

    A copy and paste below.........................

The Japanese way of doing things works much better for braids. They began with diameter, using a long-established numbering system that fits a small range of diameters into a number – for instance, a No. 4 Japanese line will be close to 0.35mm diameter, regardless of whether it’s braid, nylon, fluorocarbon or whatever. In gel-spun polyethylene braids, these Japanese numbers are commonly used from 0.6 (about 0.14mm) to 12 (about 0.7mm); and they’re usually prefixed with PE (for PolyEthylene), so now you’ll often see Japanese braids referred to as PE1, or PE4, or PE8 or whatever.

The extra good thing about this, is that one PE8 line is always going to be very close to the same diameter as the next PE8 line (at least when dealing with Japanese manufacturers, who take this sizing system quite seriously). So when you see that a reel has a capacity of 300m PE8, you can be confident that it doesn’t matter which PE8 line you get, that reel will take 300m of it. That was never true when trying to deal with pounds of breaking strain.

As to what a PE8 line will break at, well, you’re likely to see claims of anything from about 80lb to 120lb. Most times, that is of secondary concern to the angler, as all of these lines are immensely strong for their diameter compared to nylon.

I like the thought of the metered line, but at almost double the price of powerpro, i cant justify it. My friends and i have been fishing 50#power pro moss and landing snowy goupers over 50# and wreckfish, aj's, goldens and so on in over 400' of water. if the depth thing is really important and money is not an issue have at it, but other wise i can get 50# powerpro or tuf line xp in 1200yrds (tufline) 1500yrds power pro for under $90 shipped. I don't buy into the whole topshot hollow core stuff. I am not going to take the time to splice a new leader in a hurry on the boat if a fish or shark breaks the line. just my opinion, but it comes down to budget and personal preference. does not seem to have effected my friends and my success on jigging here in the mid atlantic for bottom fish or for tuna and aj's off hatteras. it comes down to need and want, do you need to use 50# powerpo or tufline ... no but you chose to over mono for obvious reasons. LOL

We dont need to use todays reels when we can use our fathers old penns but we do anyway because we want to. Comes down to what you want to spend your money on

I dont need to use colored line but I feel it gives you an advantage when fish are marking at a certain depth to get to them quickly especially tuna
