    Big Cubrera, Grouper as well...

In addition to the big AJs we've pulled in some pretty big Cubrera and Broomtail grouper off the bottom as well. All the fish in pics below were caught on jigs except for the cubrera with the popper stuck to the top of it's head...am starting to catch the bug on this technique as well. Anybody know a place to easily get big, nasty, noisy poppers that will hold up to cubrera strikes?

Have only fished with vertical jigs 10 or so times since I got started this past March. Am looking forward to seeing what I can find, mark, catch and lose in the future....especially excited for that first off-shore encounter with the schools of cow YFT I hear about.

Anyone ever catch a sail on a jig? We have plenty here and in my book they get a bit boring after everyone in the boat has gotten one. I'm kind of wondering if a bait and switch approach on a hot fish could could garner a hook-up....

The broomtail from over there looks a lot like the black grouper from over here.

I've noticed the similarities as well. You call them scamp, right? They must be related in some way...that coloration pattern looks to be exact.

We don't catch alot of them but they're always on the bigger side...30 lbs. minimum.

They like the jigs quite a bit....low and slow...most strikes come right on the bottom, within the first jerk or two. Like other groupers these guys go to the rocks really hard right away, but give up the ghost pretty quickly as well.

I was thinking those "broomtails" look like mutant scamps. WOW.
Excellent catches. I will be ashamed to post any of the scamps I catch from here on out.

Awesome. Do you have any pics of your local area? Would love to see what it looks like off the water.
