The next bite on a jig.
I don't want to say one pair is the very best because there are good and bad to every one it seems, and I have not used most of the ones that folks have mentioned, so I can't comment. I can only talk about the ones I have used, which are the following:

    ------------------

You can get these little Eagle Claw guys for $7 a pair. Basically "throw away" or great to just give to your buddy that never brings a pair ( I won't mention any names ). Small enough to put in any pocket, good braid cutters and good for small to medium rings. They are a little hard to work the ring around with sometimes, but at the price, you can overlook a lot. Sort of flimsy, but they are what they are, and I think they are stainless.

    ---------------------

These Rapalas area a good buy (maybe a consumer reports best buy ) in my opinion at $25, but only the 6.5", the bigger ones are not as good. Good carbide cutters and reasonably priced. A great all around plier for the majority of the rings used on jigs. Not rust proof, but if you put them in a holdzit, you wont have any problem. Easily opens most rings. Good for occasional use that most will get.

    ---------------------

Ocean Revolutions are good for larger medium rings up to rings the size of a dime. They will open even the largest ring without effort. Made of aluminum (except the cutters) However at the $140 price point, they are expensive. But if you are doing big rings on poppers, they would be good. Not good at all for small or small-medium rings. For me the overall size is a little large (unless you have big hands.) If they were 10-15% smaller overall and $60 less, they would be awesome and the only way to go.

ive uesd the owner ones for a couple years now. orange handles, nothing fancy looking. they kind of look like the HPA ones (though more expensive). they've been great. I thought I was nuts to spend $40 on a pair of pliers to open split rings but they were worth it. The ones over $100 are fine but really.....do you need pliers that are over $100 for split rings??? i'd rather spend that on some accurate pliers to rip hooks out. i've beat the crap out of mine too. and sure the cutters are FUBAR but i never use them anyway so its a moot point. quick spray of corrosion x or reel x and they're as good as new.

if i bought them now i'd get the HPAs bc they come with a nice sheath and lanyard. pretty much the same things though, a little better finish.

Same here, I like mine don't know if they are the best or not, but I'm very happy with these.
