I'm interested in anyone's experience using a manual pick up style bail less spinning reel such as a Shimano Saragosa 18000 while jigging and playing big fish. In other words, what are the pros and cons of bail vs no bail. Thanks.

sometimes the jigging action makes the line jump off the roller.
with no bail.....well its not good.
if you are jigging and jig gets hit on the drop...zzzzzzzzzzz
no bail to close..
other than that they are great,
Thanks Paul for your response, I see. What is the purpose of a manual bail pick up kit then? I'm not sure I understand the benefit, if any.
used surf fishing a lot, its one less moving part to get sand in and go bad. Also helps if you are having wind knot problems when using braid. Manual pick up prevents a lot of the twist.
That makes sense N2. Thank you.
many of the reels that have bails do not have that manual bail that Paul was talking of. So when using long surf rods you create alot of tourque on the bail and they would close during the cast. The end result was breaking lines and losing you lure.
I used the bailess z-baas a couple times for jigging and did not like it at all.
I've learned something new. Good info. Thanks again gents.
Yep, covered pretty much already. Just concuring with the above. Bailless reels are more for casting and surf fishing. I've lost a good number of expensive plugs before I learned to take the bail spring out and make it a manual bail. Try to cast too hard and the bail would close and snap the line, losing expensive lures.![]()
