Regarding the color coded braid .... does anyone really actually count the colors for depth on the way down? Sounds great but I have never actually seen anyone do this.

I have some on my jigging reel. I honestly think its great for deep water jigging (you mark fish in 180 foot when the water depth is 300 foot) but for what I do, I should't have spent the extra $$$ on it. It was nice to know when I was about to hit bottom (ie the yellow color came off the reel so I knew I was close) but other than that... Waste of my $$$.

saltiga boat is a great line, i have used the color code some times to estimate the deep i want to start the retrive when i,m marking fish at middle of the water columns or when you aproach a floating debrie and drop the jig to 100 ft to get a wahoo or others fish hanging low but nol results yet.
good line, color or not is the one I use.

To the op, how do like the mxj5.8? I'm thinking about getting one this year for one of my jigging rods.

I have had one for several years now and love mine. I use it mostly jigging for striped bass and bluefish. I went out on a Tuna Partyboat this fall and saw the guy next to me pull in a 60# YFT on an MXJ.
