    Avet LX 6.0 for jigging?

I am hoping to start jigging this spring and just recently got a couple jigging rods and a box full of jigs from Eastern Tackle.

I was wondering if the Avet LX with the 6:1 retrieve will work for jigging. I will be fishing out of Atlantic Beach so I want to be prepared for most of the fish that might come up off of the wrecks close by. Most likely grouper, snapper, and the ubiqutous Amberjack?

Will this reel do the job? I have a couple extra from my live bait setups for Kings and would love to not have to buy another reel. I think the max drag with free spool on the reel is somewhere in the 13-15lb range.

Thanks in advance for your input!

there is a binding issue with avets when you have the drags really somoked down. if you got it, use it. if you like it, keep on using it . i have a sx 5.0 that i just put on a 7' trevala, the reel whooped many a kings butt, so i am gonna see what it will do on some critters at the nearshore reefs.

    Mark,

Thanks for your feedback. I was thinking the same thing. I just never used much drag with the kings. I guess I will just use it and see what happens!

Theres been lots of fish caught on our boats over the years with the Avet LX. They are very tough and strong reels and can handle the abuse that you are about to give it. Town side is the grear ratio. I would highly recommend having them change the gearing to 4.3:1
The binding issue is not a hudge deal for me. I set the drag just so it doesn't bind, then when you hook up you can go to full. The binding is not noticed then when fighting fish.
I'd say stick with what you have. Then gert other stuff later if you want.

    LX 6:1

Definatly go with low speed reel.IMO High speeds have insufficiant cranking power for deepwater fishing. I have 2spd
jx 6:1 puts you on the rail, 3:1 has tremendous power. 4:1 would be good compremise.

Very True, not to mention its too fast for jigs plus it'll kill you just jigging!!! let alone cranking in fish.

I have a few of the lower gear LX's that work great for tuna up to 100 lbs (biggest I could find so far).
