what do you look for when targeting red offshore? i had a captain tell me you just find the birds in the winter and if you can get to the bottom they will be there.

Honestly, I'd prefer they weren't targeted. Great to take advantage of when it happens but these guys are the breeders and I attempt to earn a living off their babies. Like WLB said it is usually when your fishing for something else that you run across some really large schools of these guys this time of the year. We got some good pics and hauled butt to get away from them. I can't imagine how many we could have caught and who knows how big.

They were spitting up belly fulls of 16" squid. If there was that much calamari down there it certainly would explain the lame grouper bite that day.
