    Addicted...(florida panhandle)

Been fishing out of Panama City, FL for many years now and have recently become addicted to Jigging. Nothing is more fun than ripping a jig up through the water column and landing a big old AJ, or some other large fish.

Currently fishing with a Saragosa 14000F and trevala rod, and have recently ordered an Saragosa18000/trevala setup.

Now that snapper season is upon us in the gulf, what tips do you veterans have for snagging some good snapper/gag's? I'm sick of dropping live bait, just to have it snagged by some juvenile fish with a mouth too big for it's own good

Recently picked up some hammered diamonds and a shimano lucanis or two. I have been doing reading and found that both have produced decent results, with the hammered diamond being "old faithful."

Knowing my current setup, is the jigging technique most effective (for snapper/gag's), the yo-yo technique, just off the bottom?

I have read gman's thread and watched his vids, but am having a hard time figuring what techniques translate from DEEP water, to the 75-200ft range we have in the gulf.

Sorry if I'm jumping all over the place, but I feel like a kid on Christmas. New rod, new lures, now I just need the time off work to get back out on the boat...

Get some smaller jigs and Snapper prefer pink. Also look at the Aki jigs from Eastern Tackle, they smoke the Snapper here in Destin. Get the Blue, Pink and Brown ones. Two sizes will do you well, the 150 and the next size up. The big Snapper will hit any jig, I caught and released a 30# on a pink long jig speed jigging the Wednesday before season opened.

I really appreciate the info! I've been reading an awful hard time finding good info for Gulf Jigging.

Last weekend it seemed like we couldn't pull anything off the bottom unless it was a Red Snapper (using live cigar minnows).....just to have to toss them back because we're 3 days early on the season

I will definitely be checking out the Eastern Tackle Jigs.

In my experience the best bottom fishing jigs are the roscoes from blue water candy http://bluewatercandylures.com/produ...o/roscoe_jigs/
These jigs are worked directly on the bottom with as much as a big yo yo motion or as little as a tiny twitch.
    Good luck,

    Excellent.

I've read good things about the Blue Water Candy line as well.

When jigging the bottom, I would imagine the yo yo technique is preferred, to keep it near the bottom? Maybe even a slow retrieve up through the lower part of the water column, then dropping it back down? It seems there is no exact science that applies to all situations.

Sometimes a technique will work, sometimes it won't.

I guess I just need to get out on the boat and see what gets hit.

    Thanks again guys.

the yo-yo'ing technique with both the regular vertical and squid jigs works well for grouper and all types of snapper here in Costa Rica.
