Acid wrap rods?
The theory of Acid wrap rods has ben around far longer than those that call it such have been building rods. I am not writing this post to support or dismiss the theory.
If it is sound, why then has it not made it in the rod industry? Less tha 1/10 of a % pf "Quality " rods use this theory. Common sense dictates that if it's a good idea, it should float. Your thoughts? Kevin Bogan |

Shimano Japan produces an acid wrapped rod. Ocea Blue Rose B537S retails for around $400.00 US. I would love to see a US manufacture come out with a line of acid rods. You and Paul could corner the market

Acid or spiral wrapped rods are a sound way and often superior way to build a rod. There few if none of these mass built in the rod industry. This is probably due to the fact that the conventional way performs fine in most applications, upon first glance acid rods appear flawed or defected, and the industry may not want to bring a conventional vs acid controversy/competition to the masses. It's a niche the custom rod builders have filled. It is a good idea and does float. Just my thoughts.

they do work and they work well.. why dont the companys use them?!? the same reason why everyone of their rods look the same.. production!! they couldnt make an acid wrapped production rod as fast as they can a regular rod.. it take more time and more effort and certainly a chit load more money.. i got one custom made from jpr rods and he was the first choice as he is awesome at making these rods!!!.. it was still expensive and the material just to build mine if i was to price it out myself would cost me over 200 just in parts.. the guides are aweoms and blanks are rediculous powerhouses.. you need a certain blank to perform well doing this and although it has been around for a long time like i said no one wants to jump on it because of the costs and because of the ability to sell what they already produce at 1/4 of the cost and pump out more volume!! |

Kevin,
Let me first start by saying you guys build a great product. I used them when I worked on the Benchmark out of Point Top of the line product hands down and also had a chance at looking at a bunch at the Somerset show, I had a booth there. With that said, I have the opportunity to see alot of these new rod since I own and operate a full time Charter boat now in NC and pretty much all I do is Bottom Fish anymore. Most of the new designs are for jigging or designed by guys that are into that style of fishing. I've used a few acid rapped rods and honestly never saw a diffrence but I like traditional style rods and don't do alot of jigging anyway myself. I know alot of guys that can give you all the specs, wieghts ect... and why's and why not of these new rods. Bottom line is marketing and selling a new product!! Is it a fad, I don't think so but alot of guys are into it so give them what they want. I do think alot of New Guys got into the rod business to try and capitalize on whats going on, this stuff isn't cheap any of it, reels, jigs ect.. Like anything they else you'll see them come and go. This is a more specialized style of fishing, the adverage guy is not going to walk into a tackle shop and buy one off the rack. I think your going to see mostly custom biult rod for this style, guys that know exactly what they like, what style blank and wieght and components work best for them and what there fishing for. Thats just my insite i'm sure plenty of guys will have alot to say about it, get ready for a long thread!! I really like acid wrapped, but there are a lot of variables in a build. Twist right, Twist left. Does the transition use two big guides, or three smaller. I have my preferences, but everyone is different.

Jim,
You said it best, " personel preference" I like a more traditional style rod, thats what Im use to using. I think if a rod is spined right you'll have a problem with it twisting. I definiately see the concept behind it, I think the shorter rods have more twist when using a conventional reel anyway thats just what I've experienced. Ken |

kevin..good post
acid wrapped rods have been around since 1909. the best thing about them is, they do keep the rod stable while fighting a fish. i think over the next few years, you will see the freshwater bass guys fishing tourneys more with the acid wrap. ![]() alot of people are all about LOOKS, if it looks weird they may not buy it the major companys would have to spend alot of money on promotion of the "new" concept.why change something when they can just sell the same crap as they do now, and people buy it. the major companys dont care how they work ..just that they sell.. do they offer different butt lengths?? so the rods fits better..NO different fore grips for comfort..NO they sell what they want...NOT what may be a better product GO ACID BABY ![]() |

I see the arguement that its a double edged sword, if the other stuff is already selling, why compete with it. The golf club industry does the opposite. I build golf clubs as a hobbie, but cant say I know how to make a good one, I just like doing it. If you saw the components buiseness here you would see that these guys support every new item that comes out. If its a reasonably sound idea, the consumer would demand it.
I dont see why the cost of building one should be much higher. explain. A rod twisting slightly versus dramatically is nothing to worry about. Calstar rod blanks are one of the most popular in the world and are on the most expensive rods. Many are not straight, have snakes in the upper fifth, no big deal. |
