We ( Bruce, Ryan, Bill, and myself) went out on Sunday to give my brother in law's boat its first offshore voyage. Our main goal was to look for some dolphin and do some jigging when we had enough for dinner and some for the freezer. Pretty good ride out, but his 22ft hydrasport is a little bit of a wet ride.
I hate fishing in a crowd and with the plethora of boats that were going to be between the 14 buoy and 90ft. drop I had absolutely no desire to head that direction. We had heard a couple reports from NW places and it was on the way to where I had a good feeling we would find some fish so we headed that way and trolled from #1 to #2 to #3 with 2 short strikes. Didn't see any flyers and I didn't like the water so we pressed on.
Since we were pretty close to a spot I had gotten some AJ's on before...we headed that way and jigged some up. Nothing big, but we did get a few 30-35lbers. We cut it short here because the boat owner was feeling a little funny so we got moving before it got worse.
We headed south in the direction I was hoping there would be fish. Turns out about 4 miles from the papoose we saw a small weedline and we pointed the boat down it. A mile later we found a nice rip and weedline and decided to troll it for awhile. We picked away at a nice class of fish...fought 6 nice bulls, pulled one off. They ran 20-25lbs I would guess. The bigger fish were definitely on the offshore side of the rip. When we trolled the inshore side, we got killed with short strikes and pulled in 1 bailer. From the word on the radio...it was a slow day and our fish were a better class than most so we considered ourselves fortunate and decided to do a little more jigging.
We headed to the spot I went two weeks ago, where we caught some AJ's and a cobia and jigged it for awhile. Everyone had fun catching AJ's from 20-35lbs or so. I caught a couple 7-8lb blues that came up missing the back 1/3 of their bodies...just gushing all over. I also caught a nice almaco jack...and they definitely fight harder than an amberjack for some reason.
The wind picked up and made it a very confused choppy sea on the way back in...another wet ride. Anyways...we all had fun and got some nice eats. I'm ready for the jigging competition though...hunting for the big boys!
