The wind-ow was open then closed then open then... Lets just go and see what happens. Left out at 6:30 in some thick fog and found a steep swell left form a lot of NE-SE blow. About 15 miles out it was clear we would be forever getting to the break so we targeted some warm water in the 30-40 mile range. Had we went bottom fishing I think we could have brought the smack down but our hearts weren't in that. We did catch the usual bottom stuff along with a couple fat red grouper. Pete caught the biggest one (upper 20's) on a 150gram Riley rod that bent like the letter "L" from the fore grip.
After the NE wind laid out we started to make our way out to the deep again only to have it go SW like a switch and cause us to rethink it again. We fished for a wile 12 miles from the break and pushed on out. The last five miles took forever at 15 kts.
Arrived on site at 2pm with a long ride back. Water temp was 72-73. I told the crew we had two hours to make it happen. We fished around a wile till we found some nuggets that didn't have jacks on them and found some fish.
I was dropping a 160 Katana pigroast and had it stopped 30 ft below the boat. When it came into view it was a small Wahoo, my first on a jig. Shortly after, several kings would join it as Katana victims. Pete was using a 240 Katana and caught a couple Blackfin Tuna and had a bigger Wahoo pull after a good run. Wes and I also caught AP's before having to start the long ride back in. All my fish were caught on a new 200 gram Riley rod Mike made for me. I can't wait to test in on some big jacks. Here are some pictures from the day.
Pete put the 150 gram rod to the "test" with this one.
Little hoo on the pigroast.
There will be sushi tonight.
AP's are still out there.
