    2011 NC Jigging Tournament?

Hi, my name is Mark Gorges and I run fishing charters primarily out of Wrightsville Beach, NC. As you very likely know, North Carolina is home to some of the best deep jigging in the world, with everything from monster amberjacks and grouper to tuna, wahoo, and billfish eating jigs. What we at NCJigging.com would like to do for 2011 is start the first annual North Carolina Deep Jigging tournament. To the best of my knowledge, there is nothing that quite fits in this category so I would like input from other jiggers to decide how this tournament should be structured if enough interest is there to put it together. My initial goal for 2011 is to get a structured event together with at least 20 anglers and grow it from there. Here are a few initial thoughts and questions:

    - Since a lot of jigging is how you jerk your jig, instead of a per boat fee it will be $100 per angler (and you could book a trip with Capt. Dave), $25 per side pots for individual species, and a $200 High Roller Monster Pot for biggest fish within that pot.

    - Besides the general category there will be side pot prizes for Junior Angler, Lady Angler, Grouper, African Pompano, Cobia, Wahoo, and Tuna.

    - Since most jiggers are center console fishermen and are very subject to weather, I think a captain’s choice week with two to three fishing days fits best.

    - I think the best overall jigging in the state is directly off the Wilmington, NC coast, so initially I think that is a good starting point. Weigh in will be at a pre-determined local marina or tackle shop. As the tournament(s) progresses more areas (Hatteras, Oregon Inlet) can be added or separate tournaments can be set up.

    - First three places pay a 70/20/10 split after tournament expenses.

PLEASE feel free to contact me with suggestions, comments, or any ideas that you think would benefit a tournament like this! Shoot me a PM or my email is Mark@NCJigging.com. If you would be interested in helping this thought become reality please contact me as well!!!

    Thanks,

    Mark

    Jigging

I am relatively new to the jigging, but absolutely love it. We went on 12/31/10, and had a ball. I would be interested if there was a weigh in the Morehead area, I doubt I would travel to WB to fish a tournament. I really liked the OIFC format for the NC King Mackerel State Championship, with 9 days of window, and you picked 2. I hope to see more of this in the future. I wonder if the Wahoo Challenge would have ended if they had adopted this format.

Could be pretty cool! Depending on format and price, I'd be game.

Personally, I'd rather do a boat entry fee as opposed to an angler fee.

A lot might depend on this 17b closure too. Might not be a good year to start it.

Either way, good luck and look forward to seeing what you guys come up with.

Based on the conversations I have had I am pleased to announce this event will be held the 3rd week of May (15th-21st) to allow the keeping of Grouper and it will allow anybody traveling a day to get back. $100 per angler, if you charter a boat and the captain or mate pays their entry they can fish as well.

Still confirming a weigh-in location, I have had a couple places volunteer to host it but I am still working out the details, most likely will be on the water in/around Wrightsville. I will post the legal mumbo-jumbo later. Entry fee will include a number of things including a meal, shirt, and goodie bag.

Email Mark@NCJigging.com for more details or if you would like to get involved as a sponsor in any capacity. Entry fee will remain the same up until 24 hours before the begin date.

    More Details

Somethings have change from the above post, check this link for more details! This is going to happen and I am super stoked. If you want to fish out of a port besides Wrightsville contact me and I will contact a weigh station. For the Morehead area it would likely be Town Creek Marina.
