Hi, my name is Mark Gorges and I run fishing charters primarily out of Wrightsville Beach, NC. As you very likely know, North Carolina is home to some of the best deep jigging in the world, with everything from monster amberjacks and grouper to tuna, wahoo, and billfish eating jigs. What we at NCJigging.com would like to do for 2011 is start the first annual North Carolina Deep Jigging tournament. To the best of my knowledge, there is nothing that quite fits in this category so I would like input from other jiggers to decide how this tournament should be structured if enough interest is there to put it together. My initial goal for 2011 is to get a structured event together with at least 20 anglers and grow it from there. Here are a few initial thoughts and questions:
- Since a lot of jigging is how you jerk your jig, instead of a per boat fee it will be $100 per angler (and you could book a trip with Capt. Dave), $25 per side pots for individual species, and a $200 High Roller Monster Pot for biggest fish within that pot.
- Besides the general category there will be side pot prizes for Junior Angler, Lady Angler, Grouper, African Pompano, Cobia, Wahoo, and Tuna.
- Since most jiggers are center console fishermen and are very subject to weather, I think a captain’s choice week with two to three fishing days fits best.
- I think the best overall jigging in the state is directly off the Wilmington, NC coast, so initially I think that is a good starting point. Weigh in will be at a pre-determined local marina or tackle shop. As the tournament(s) progresses more areas (Hatteras, Oregon Inlet) can be added or separate tournaments can be set up.
- First three places pay a 70/20/10 split after tournament expenses.
PLEASE feel free to contact me with suggestions, comments, or any ideas that you think would benefit a tournament like this! Shoot me a PM or my email is Mark@NCJigging.com. If you would be interested in helping this thought become reality please contact me as well!!!
Thanks,
Mark
