Nope, I woulld not touch that with a 10' pole. A friend that I fish with was in one and was always was a mess when the boat was broke down. Seems like one of the share holders kids were skiing and driving the boat in the ground. Seems to be the worst thing about having a group deal going is who is runing the boat...lets see..we have Capt. Crunch, Capt. Hard A Ground and Capt Clam Digger just to name a couple...
A couple of friends of mine have done that - One group shared a 27' Albemarle, and another group with a 49' Hatteras.
Each group seemed to have lots of conflicts -
"Do I really need to rebuild the engines?"
"Why do we have to bottom paint every year?"
"Why do we need to upgrade the electronics?"
"What do you mean you have family in and want to botton fish?"
The list goes on. Each group never used the boats much due to conflict and have sense sold the boats.
It is not something I would ever consider.
I have seen this tried many different ways. Big boat, small boat, didn't matter. Someone gets lazy and someone gets greedy. How pissed would you be when your day rolls around and the boat is low on fuel and loaded with salt spray. Only once did I see four people come close to success in this joint ownership. It was a blowboat and the boat name was Four Play. Go figure.
I wish it could work out well. It would really save me some $$$ but I think in the end I would end up with a big headache. One of the guys I fish with suggested that we buy a boat together and my thoughts were that would be the quickest way to end a friendship. I'll stick with owning my boat outright.
The way it works is to let your buddy or friend buy the boat and you have to do is pay a little $$$ for fuel, bait, and some clean up time. Simple as that.
