So i was in the wmo tournament and didnt do to well. 1st day had a dolphin and a wahoo. 2nd and 3rd day got the skunk. Im pretty confused on not getting any bites. We did have 2 knockdowns but no takers. My question is: out of the 397 boats, how many of them had a trip like mine and how many did not catch any marlin? Seems like it would be a low number but just wondering. Any ideas?

Your '07 WMO sounds like most of mine in years past.Heck I can even remember one year wishing I had seen a mahi much less a wahoo. I would guess that a bunch of boats didn't catch a marlin and many got the skunk.
If one was so inclined they could go through the list of boats on the WMO site and see what they caught but that is not necessarily accurate as I know that many boats don't bother with catch reports unless they have a slob.
Ive done that before but your right they dont update. Very depressing. We followed the tuna jumping out of the water. Pilot whales all over and nothing. Run them down, the riggers pop and nada. Never saw a marlin, but the rebel caught the winner 200 yards across from us. What a slap in the face.
I wouldn't consider it a slap in the face necessarily, it just wasn't your turn to get your number called. I'd much rather see the winning fish caught right beside me than 50 miles away--it means that we made the right call and were in the right place at the right time, just unlucky.
Sorry you had a tough tournament but if it was easy then everyone would do it. Good luck next year!
pwake, the number was probably higher than you think. I know its an old cliche, but man if you did your best , what more can you do ????![]()

By my calculations 169 boats caught at least 1 billfish out of 397 boats. Of these 169 boats that caught a billfish, 77 had one billfish and 92 had multiple billfish. With 394 boats entered, 228 of these went without catching a billfish.
Don't sweat it, I've fished more than one Marlin tournament with a skunk.

Even though its a tournament its still 'fishing' and often luck plays into the equation more than anything else. Captializing on the opportunities that come up is the key.
we lost a monster dolphin and a monster tuna the second and third day and I only saw one white beating meat the whole tournament.
