    Witch rigs

Has anyone ever used ballyhoo witch rigs?

I have always put one in my spread when I am in South Carolina and it seems to be the one lure that never catches a daggum thing .

Is there any special tricks to using them or are they just not that good?

are you talking about sea witch style rigs? they produce alot of good fish up and down the coast. how are you rigging them? i've personally had great success with them when I dont want a big baithead, but want a little color and weight on my naked hoos

Yeah I pull them alot up here in MHC, NC. At first I hated them because they looked so simple and I didn't believe some thing like that could catch a fish. If you compare to a Jr. Ilander or an Iland Tracker the only difference is the chrome head. To me that little difference seems to have no effect on its ability to catch fish. Here in MHC all the charter boats have at least one in there spread when fishing for dolphin, wahoo, YFT, and sails. Some boats pull an entire spread of Sea Witches. All colors work put the most consistent for me are blue / crystal and pink / crystal (for dolphin and YFT) for wahoo I like to pull blue / black and purple and black. In all my witches I like to have a little mylar to spice it up. Check out Capt. Joe Shute he makes hand tied witches that are better that the commercially sold ones.

We use them all the time out of OI. I learned to tie my own about a year ago and it has saved me tons of money. We have caught tons of dolphin on them as well as a sail this past summer. I know that many of the boats out of PC and Oi pull witches. What else do you pull in your spread?

Never had one, I was a lineman.
You've got to know how to rig a Ballyhoo correctly to get anything out of a seawitch.

There are about a thousand awesome articles and videos on here about rigging ballyhoo. Rubber band rigs, pin rigs, pinless rigs, circle hook rigs, with a chinweight, without a chinweight etc. All except the circlehook (as far as I have seen) can be used in conjunction with a seawitch, Ilander (some circle rigs for billfish), JAG whatever. If you can make a Hoo swim, you can put anything in front of it pretty much and something will eat it.

Had friend once that fished them backwards and they still caught...he thought that was the way they went on....there's a chance of that here maybe too(??)
