Got fish
Been there, had that. The bad thing about it, once you get it, its easier to get flare ups again.
Kidney function, diet or alcohol (beer) can set it off. Uric acid build up.
I can usually feel it coming on and I drink water like a camel to ward off the attack. Works for me.

Aloha guys
I came down with it too. I thought it was a fat guys desease. I'm thin so wtf?
It hit me in the heel of my right foot. While sleeping the acid moves through yer veins and gets stuck in joints. It crystalizes and locks up the joint.
I discoved diet keeps it in check. I have a list of foods that set it off and just make sure I dont eat too much from the list.
Four years latter and no further problems with it. Lucky I guess, everyones kidney works a little different.

Allopurinol 100-300mg once a day will work if diet does not. Somr people seem to build up uric acid no matter what they do. High uric acid also forms kidney stones.
for an acute attack you can take motrin or aleve. The doctor can give you indomethacin or prednisone to clear up severe attacks. They used to use colchicine but it's fallen out of favor

I have severe gout and am about to get a flair up today. I have talked to lots of doctors and done tons of research on it. Here is what I have learned. mind you I am not a doctor so go see one and take what I say with a grain of salt. but not two grains as it may cause a flair up.
Like previously said gout is the crystalization of uric acid in your joints. Uric acid is heavy so that is why it generally goes to your toes and ankles. Gout is more heriditary then diet sensitive but exccess alcohol, especially beer can cause flair ups so can certain shellfish like shrimp and lobster and foods high in purines (sp). Believe it or not I have come to the uneductated conclusion that most of my flairs are caused by chinese food. don't know why but like an idiot I keep testing this theory thinking it wont be it but it usually is. I had pork lo mein yesterday and vuala.........I know its coming. I take colchcine once a day for for prevention and take more when i feel a flair up. I cannot take indocine because i had stomach surgury and it really screws with my stomach. doc said i really shouldn't be taking it. But indocine use to knock it out in a couple hours tops.
alopurinal (sp) has been the preferred preventive once a day medication and i am about to switch to that. but i have been told to never start the allopurinal (sp) treatment during a flair.
water is also a huge preventive treatment. and excersise of course. but how the hell can you exercise when you cant walk to the bathroom to take a piss. this stuff hurts.
good luck

Yeah...Kidney Stones run in my family, GOUT has never seemed to be a problem that I know of. Beer is a couple times a month for me, so it must be my diet, I love shrimp, oysters, clams and recently have been eating these Spiny Lobsters that we catch off the coast.
My pain is compounded since I have Heel Spurs in both feet and the electrocution in 98' damaged the nerves there. Wow, like I needed more problems with them. They did start me on Prednisone and a couple other meds, amazing the pain subsided within hours of starting. Best my feet have felt in years. Now if I could just get these Spurs removed!
Thanks for the insight guys!!

You CANNOT start allopurinol during a flair. the doctor is correct. It actually makes the flair worse. Start allopurinol as soon as the flair is over. Indomethacin is very hard on the stomach as are motrin and other drugs in that class. Prednisone also cause stomach upset but it is not as bad as indocin or motrin. However it has plenty of side effects of its own.

gout
I get attacks once or twice a year.
sometines the right foot sometimes the left.
Indomethacin is the drug of choice for me.
Never leave home without it.
Knocks it out in a few days makes it bearable in one.
I feel your pain.

Well Ace I just got over a bout of gout last month. 10 days of cerveza and lots of shrimp in Costa rica did me in. I had it in my big toe a couple of years ago and drank lots of black cherry juice and it went away after a couple of days. This time it came in my ankle and I had to get some colchcine from my doc. I hate it for you cause it hurts like hell.
