When I was starting my old lure business and I needed extra income, I was in furniture / appliance for a while doing their repo work. I'd watch "my money" in the form of welfare checks being plopped down on fancy furniture and big screen TV. These people never worked a day in their lives but lived better than I did. I saw "my money" in the form of food stamps being used for jumbo shrimp and fillet mignon only to see the buyer get in a new Mercedes to drive it home to a fine home that I was paying for...

The system is broken... The skunk currently occupying 1600 Pennsylvania Ave is working hard to make sure it never gets fixed.

The VAT tax is the fairest most equitable tax there is. EVERYONE pays. Not just those above a certain income level. As mentioned before the top 5% pay 93% of taxes in this country. A lot of money is left on the table by not collecting from those that in reality can afford but don't pay. It eliminates the dodgers and cheats from their game...
VAT isn't a "flat tax" as such. Its basically a sales tax applied to non essential , again I use the word "luxuries". It does away with capitol gains, inheritance, and other ugly if not criminal double taxes. Corporations themselves in countries that use a VAT system can keep their money where it continues to work and grow for them. Their products themselves take the tax burden. Want a dollar widget? Its gonna cost you $1.17...
