In my opinion Gerrad, it shouldn't matter if the guy next to you is a better mate, much less the guy across the country or arcoss the ocean. I agree with Box on what he said: It is about yourself: Doing your BEST everyday. I left a damn good career with 11 years service at the age of 29 to become a full time sportfishing mate. You know why? Because I couldn't do my best only fishing part time. I couldn't go everyday, seeing both the best and worst days of fishing. I didn't have the time to put into the boat I wanted to. And now that I have been mating full time, I still loose sleep on nights before a charter. I still check fishing reports from the area I fish and the areas I used to fish. I get over anxious about a bite. I stay too late in the evenings after a trip working on the boat when all others are gone. I try my best to learn everyday I am on the water and from others around me who have more experience. I spend our blow days or open days at the boat, ensuring my shit is right and cleaning and waxing. And talking to people on the dock, trying to book trips
Why? Happy Captain and a clean boat es muy importante, amigo! But, its also because I want to be the best that I can be. No one will ever ask anymore of you than to be the best you have the ability to be. Have a guilty conscious. Be able to lay your head down every nigh with no regrets. Only lessons learned and the ability to apply those lessons towards tomorrow.
I do not worry about being better than someone fishing on the boat beside me. They do not sign my check. They are not my bossman. And they are not my charter clients. Do I respect them? ABSOLUTELY. Are they my friends? Yes. Am I better than they are? No. Are they better than me? No. We are all in this together. At the end of the day, everyone who gave their all and did the best to their ability, giving a full days work, are the best Captains and mates. Wherever you may be.
Are you coming back to Hatteras, Gerrad?

and yes im back in hatteras now look for work whats NEW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I do not know of any one for sure looking' a mate, but I know there are several at Hatteras Harbor that do not have a mate right now. Time to do some sniffing around, huh?
Who works harder? East or west? Thats a tricky question which I see has many different answers---none being right, none being wrong. What part of the East coast?
Mid-Atlantic? They have to get up pretty early to start their day and get back a little later. There are times they may start bluefin trolling then gear towards yellowfin or whitey. Or go into chunking. Also must be ready to bail dolphins.
Hatteras? they get to sleep in a little later but have to deal with rougher conditions. They'll go fishing on days others won't. They can be catching yellowfins pretty steady but have to be ready for the man in blue at any time as well as be ready to go into full bail mode on the dolphins. Then put out the planer for a couple of hoos.
North-East? Overnighters are popular up there.
Florida? How about collecting live bait, but going trolling as well. Or rigging mullets for two triple dredges as well as your ballyhoos.
Just a few thoughts to consider.
Now how about charter or private. The mate on the private boat will have to spend a lot more time cleaning, waxing, and chamoiing. But the charter guy must have all types of tackle ready for just about anything at any time.
West Coast? I understand they generally leave very early in the morning or the evening before. the boats over there are generally slower as well.
I have also seen west coast setups with double rows on there "belly bars" as well as rocket launchers on another band above the hard top on tower boats. All with a rod in it ready for something different.
When I went to Cabo, they (west coasters) would look at me funny as I "made bait" from packs of frozen ballyhoos the evening before. I laughed because I would still be sleeping while they were leaving at 5AM trying to catch bait. We did our trolling with dredges and bait and they dragged their "jigs" until they saw the birds. Then they would run and gun and pitch their live baits. We both caught.
How about crews. Being from the east coast (MD), we are used to doing it all ourselves. Clear lines, set lines, leader, gaff, etc...it's a one man show in the pit. Other places they are used to having helpers. Yea, its nice but you see mates who can't leader and gaff a 20lb dolphin or 40lb tuna by themselves. I can't say anything for westcoasters on this end as I don't know what is typical. I am familier with traveling and yes, I am used to having a helper on board when in different countrys. And it sure is nice to have another mate in the pit come tourny time back home.
What I have seen is it truely doesn't matter where one is from. You need to enjoy it and strive to do better. Pay attention to the consistantly top boats around you . If you do that you will probably be one of those who is prepared at all times and ready for anything you might see. In Costa Rica you see crews
from all over and I can think of both east coasters, west coasters, and gulf coasters who are consistently on top of their game.
Thanks that is the best answer i have herd yet makes a lot of since to me bro!!!!!!!!!!!![]()
