My question stands. Why do they have them at all? They are not an elected official nobody voted for them for office. Nobody hired them in competetive service. She is nothing but a spouse maybe they need to start learning their place. Second of all as you stated the rest had that number at the end of their time in the white house. If you're going to claim that Michelle Obama's staff size is unprecedented, you should do some homework and fact check. Fact is, it's on par with or lower than previous First Ladies.

FROM SNOPES:
The 2008 White House Office Staff List issued during the final year of President George W. Bush's tenure in office, includes sixteen different staffers with the words "First Lady" in their position titles; exactly the same number as that listed for Michelle Obama in 2009. If all staffers listed with "Social Secretary" in their titles are included as part of the First Lady's retinue (as was done with the Michelle Obama example cited above), then Mrs. Bush had at least 18 people working for her in 2008 (not including any of the various personnel listed only as "Staff Assistants," some of whom may also have worked for her directly or indirectly).

In fact, according to Anita McBride, Laura Bush's former Chief of Staff, Mrs. Bush had between 24 and 26 staffers working for her by the end of her husband's second term in office. It's therefore fair to say that the size of Michelle Obama's staff is not "unprecedented," but rather on a par with her immediate predecessor's.

Moreover, according to the Associated Press, several other First Ladies had larger numbers of personnel working for them than Michelle Obama does:

Perhaps it not so much the size of the staff..or what it costs the taxpayer..its the fact that this administration was elected on the platform of CHANGE..how many times did bama state that the burden on taxpayers was too much,excessive spending was out of control..then he doesnt live up to what he promises , or does the same thing he states he wants to change...typical bullshit politician..but this one slicker.

Why do they have them? Well, I'm not sure but your post was about how M. Obama has an "unprecedented" number. I merely chimed in to let you know that it's not, it's pretty much on par with what is on record for past First Ladies. Do I think it's necessary? Without knowing exactly what those staff members do, I can't answer. Do I think government is over-staffed? Always have. My point was that if you're going to state "facts" at least put a little effort into making sure you're right. Or do you need some staff members to do that for you Duck? And, why is it that some of you on the board sink to the level of using names like "silverback" and "baboon" then claim that none of you are racist? Get over it, we have a black president.
