Exclamation Where did this mad dash for insurance come from!

Today I have gotten a couple phone calls from people saying I NEED INSURANCE!

I was baffled where was this recent string of phone calls coming from.
I asked Colleen, if there was some sort of letter sent out to all of NJ telling boaters they had to have insurance. Because these werent the normal "o im not covered!" calls

Another woman in the office quickly stood up and said O. i have the article...

So here is a run down from the Press of AC:

a proposed state law would require powerboat owners to carry liablility insurance just as car owners do. under the measure, which was released thurs by the Assembly Transportation, Public Works and Independant Authorities Committee, powerboat operators would be required to have liability coverage insuring against losses, injuries or deaths. Coverage limits would be set at $100,000 for an individual killed or injured in an accident, and $200,000 should an accident kill or injure multiple people.

Boaters who fail to carry the insurance would face fines of as much $1,000 and a one year suspension of their boating license. Boaters who fail to insure their vessel after a first offense would face as much as $5,000, two weeks in jail and a two year loss of their license.

All of us should have insurance, you got to pay to play ....but most likely it will be mandatory now....

I did hear something about this being proposed as well just wasn't sure about the final outcome.

As soon as you get more details let us know and I'll be sure to keep our slipholders up to date on it as well.

I guess in the meantime can you check on our own boat policy?

    Thanks,
    Mary

As soon as I hear more I will keep everyone updated.

In regards to your policy you are covered just took a look at it, this is basically more geared towards the people boating without insurance and really came about from a bunch of accidents with uninsured boaters where people were not compensated and lossed loved one...However I will say it some times is not that much of a difference in premium to carrier higher limits..and it never hurts to be on the safe side.

I must say the season is here! everybodies getting ready....

Wow.....guess I'm really surprised that more people out there are not carrying liability as part of their overall insurance coverage......I carry $1M Liability with $500K for uninsured boater, $500K Fuel Spill and $10K medical.... and I am not a charter boat.....

    ......am I "over-insured"???

Not at all...a certain person I know carries 5,000,000, it is all about being prepared and you ultimatly determine what you feel is adequate. I think that sounds like excellent coverage. I really couldnt make an educated opinion without actually looking at your policy..but it sounds like you have yourself covered..You hope nothing happens but you plan as if the worst will happen...

...like I said before in insurance, agents are kinda like your mothers...we tell you to tie your shoes so you dont trip and fall and break a bone...

    whoa, wait a minute......

i bought that little 15 whaler with the idea i wasnt going to buy insurance. i mean im going to keep it in the garage, after i fix it until its perfect. im putting a new engine on the back, new mahogany, bimini, steering, everything. it has to look perfect. both my boats are 20 this year. i promised to name it kitty, after my girlfriends cat. but i need insurance to run down the canal? and i dont mean drunk! next thing you know, you'll need insurance for a surf board. can i just add a little to my other boat policy? tommy did take my tie wraps last year.......after i ordered them. does that count for anything? if i put everything i own in my girlfriends name, is that a way around it? jeeeez!

    Exclamation

Here is a little more info on the Prosposed Bill ( it still has to go to the full assembly for a vote)

This bill will require all New Jersey boaters to have all boats, which are required to be registered with the state of New Jersey, to also be insured with limits of at least $100,000 for bodily injury or death.

*New Jersey law requires all vessels which are greater than 12 feet in length and all power vessels regardless of length, to be registered. under this legislation, owners or operators of a vessel (including jet skis and personal watercraft) on New Jersey waterways would be required to carry insurance identification cards

The Bill is known as the "Donald W. Mc. Gloan Law"
