Well being in the land surveying business kinda goes hand in hand with fishing. A cartoon I saw in a surveying publication refered to the rodman (the guy out front carrying the pole with the glass prism on it) as the pohoeder. Translation: pole holder. Well that could account for a lot of things, rod holders, myself holding a fishing rod or surveying rod. I thought it was catchy. The dialect probably comes from somewhere around the lower South Carolina low country. So, hello everybody from the triad area of NC.
