I've seen threads like this before on other sites and find it both interesting and entertaining. I'll throw our boat into the mix with a blurb that was featured in the 'Transom Trivia' section of the November 2005 issue of "InTheBite.com Unplugged":
My father, brother and myself own and operate the 46’ Hatteras “Nimrod” out of Annapolis and Ocean City, MD. Back in 1984 we put “Nimrod” on the transom of our first Hatteras. At that time we didn't realize the informal but more common meaning of the word – “A person regarded as silly, foolish, or stupid”. Although that was not the meaning we intended, I guess some may consider anyone who owns a boat a bit foolish all together.
We actually chose the name “Nimrod” for the meaning found in Webster’s Dictionary – “A mighty or great hunter”. In addition, it also has biblical ties as Nimrod was a king and “a mighty hunter before the Lord” who just happened to be the great-grandson of Noah – you know, of the Ark fame. Because we consider ourselves hunters of fish, we thought it might be a good fit. Certainly it is an easy enough name to pronounce over the VHF which doesn't hurt. Since first using the name “Nimrod”, we have also learned that Nimrod is the name given to a series of British Maritime Reconnaissance Aircraft and a title of a popular record album by the band Green Day.
Over 20 years later, people on the docks and at the bars often refer to us as those “Nimrods”. In our eyes, the name is appropriate to describe us - whichever meaning you use!![]()
