A few months ago the wife committed suicide. Very sad. Plus she did it in the most gruesome way which had a terrible effect on the kids who found her first.
I guess it was due to the family financial woes but I do know the Dad started drinking heavily too. Maybe she was drinking hearvily too.
He lost his health insurance along with his business. He didn't qualify for the recent Federal stipend to help those laid off because he wasn't laid off. Indeed, he want's qualified for COBRA because h is business folded and the group plan didn't continue.
Without any hope of commission, I helped him put his kids on the State of Texas Childrens Health Insurance Plan (SCHIP) which is, essentially, welfare ($50 a year for each kid and everything else is nearly free). It's a great deal and I hate to see any kid going without health insurance.
My wife who's a medical case manager helped him apply for food stamps, another welfare program. I understand from my wife that he's going to apply for welfare once his unemployment benefits run out. Of course, of late Republicans in Congress have labeled unemployment benefits, particularly those that are continued by Federal stipends, to be unjustified welfare too.
Now there's two things about this story that will certainly surprise the racists above. Firstly, he and his family are white and conservative to the hilt. Secondly, he's a lot quieter now about the "underclass" getting welfare.
Actually, he sings a completely different tune now about social support nets. Now, he says, "Why shouldn't I take advantage of them? I've paid into them all my life? I'm entitled to get my money's worth, aren't I?"
Of course, he fails to mention that most others accepting state assistance may also have paid into the programs all their lives. I guess that's his way of avoiding having to confront the dissonance his brain feels of being a conservative race baiter and feeling superior all the time and then having to do what's best for his family, accept assistance himself.
I suspect you guys will do the same when you're on the public dole. You'll find a weird way to think about it like my neighbor did so you don't have to confront all the vile crap you've always said about people who use the safety nets. Doing so is simply in the conservative nature.
