In that quote he talks of I take it, a white guy who's business is on its ass and he went on "public assistance". Makes it sure seem push pull click click easy to get on it. Try that shit in Florida... If your white and live in a modest house you flat won't get on it. Not the insurance, not the food stamps, none of what THEY get.
I have had my broke dick periods. Tough enough as a caucasian to collect unemployment. When Murray Brothers closed their retail shop and my position was no longer I had a baby at home. I gathered myself together and began to build a business from scratch. I had no income and sure could have used a hand. My daughter was hospitalized twice in that time real sick baby. No help from the state, fed, nothing. I did apply for every kind of assistance imaginable but my white ass precluded me from getting it.
Well instead of ***** and moan about being down on my luck I sucked it up and took shit work. Like anyone should do. The classifieds are filled with shit work that these god damn primodonnas are too cocky to take. Flip burgers at the golden arches, deliver papers, I don't give a shit. Work for what you get. Me? I repoed furniture and appliances on the wrong side of town. I did that and started my own company at the same time til the company was lucrative enough to support what I need. So fuck free money. I was and am better off without it!

Slowfisher you just offended the hell out of me. I am a member of society. My wife is Chinese. Our kids are therefore mixed. I run a racially and gender mixed team at both of my full-time jobs and have quite happily worked with people from India, many Hispanics, Jews, blacks, Middle-Easterners, Africans (who worked their butts off while complaining about how lazy Americans were), Inuit, Asians, Europeans, currently have a German kid on the team. I've lived in China and traveled the world. My daughter plays on a racially diverse soccer team coached by a Jamaican. Grew up poor on the edge of Chester, PA hearing from my Polish Uncles how tough they had it when prejudices were against them (and how much harder they had to work) and have lived and enjoyed a diverse life caring more about the quality of the individual than their color, extending through my private and professional life including my hiring policies. Never saw the logic in racism. Just helped a guy unload a huge cart overloaded with shipments not because he is black (didn't matter) and not because it had anything to do with my job but because Walter is a cool guy and he was overloaded. Then I walked in to my office and read this joke. Found it funny. I refuse to apologize for that. Showed it to several people of non-white origin. They found it funny. Having lived the melting pot to its fullest extent, as a member of society who is amused by this joke and is not a race baiter, I can really only say screw you for labeling people by your own prejudices. None of us found it race baiting. In fact, humor and hard work are two things that help get people past racial barriers.

Clt-capt...great quotes! Whether you like Reagan or not (I do regard him very highly but am also willing to recognize his mistakes), those quotes are both appropriate and true. I'm with you and in favor of helping those who need help while they need help so that they can build up to supporting themselves and theirs. It is meant to be a temporary support system for that purpose, not a career.
