MANASQUAN — Coast Guard and state officials have canceled their planned press conference
about the overnight sinking of a 69-foot fishing boat off the Manasquan Inlet.
About 1,500 gallons of diesel fuel were on board the Susie II, which remains
submerged about a half-mile north-east of the jetties on the inlet, according to Petty
officer Chris McLaughlin, a Coast Guard spokesman.
"The spill has been contained," McLaughlin said. "Nothing's going to wash up on
the beaches. The stuff that made the sheen on top of the water will dissipate."
The boat's owner is still working with a salvage company to raise the sunken vessel, said Petty Officer Chris McLaughlin, he company, Budget Salvage and Towning, sent divers into the water at the salvage site.
The divers have plugged the holes in the fishing boat.
A rescue boat crew from Coast Guard Station Manasquan Inlet was dispatched to the inlet at about 12:15 a.m. after a crewman aboard the Susie II radioed for help. The boat had begun taking on water, and three fisherman — all in survival suits — had to be rescued.
There was a sheen of diesel fuel on the surface of the water near the site and
officials were concerned of the sinking's environmental impact.
